Civil War

Since Spaeny’s character was shooting with a film camera, I just wanted to see her at least once changing rolls in the middle of a fire fight and yell, “I’m out! Reloading!”

I thought this film was brilliantly executed. The pacing was perfect; it all kinda bubbled up to a boiling point.

I heard a few reviews bashing it for not having any point, or that it’s too apolitical for being a movie about a hypothetical civil war. My opinion is that the movie should feel that way. It’s a movie about journalists who go in to these war zones unarmed, hoping not to get shot (by either side), just to get some coverage on the brutality of it all for the rest of the world to see. In a lot of cases, in the real world, journalists who do this exact job often take a neutral stance. So if the film is from their point of view, I don’t think it’s at all important to know where they stand on the political spectrum... Plus Garland is obviously playing around with the idea that you don’t know who the “good guys” are, and who the “bad guys” are (except Plemons is clearly fucked). The Winter Wonderland scene is a great example; the snipers could technically be shooting at their own men. There is even mention of an “antifa massacre”, but we don’t really know if they are doing the massacring, or if they are the ones being massacred. I don’t think we ever even find out why this war started in the first place… So maybe, just maybe, the point is that there is no point to all the senseless violence, just because of some political/cultural divide.
