Dune: Part Two

2024

😮‍💨 I was initially pretty disturbed to watch in light of Gaza. so much to grieve in the world and the tragedy of power over love was difficult to witness. Movies don’t get made in a vacuum and it’s disorienting to see all the internet hype about the movie and no mention of ceasefire from the creators/contributors.

👍🏽The desert setting was beautiful, the Harkennen world eerie, costumes were cool and I liked silly Christopher Walken as emperor.

👎🏽 despite it being 3hrs it felt too rushed at some parts, so many plot points making it harder for me to buy paul atreides’ fall.

🙏🏽From an mdiv perspective, I appreciated the role of religion in the film but also thought the depiction of fundamentalists lacked nuance. I thought the story actually flattened the power, meaning and potential religion can have. I feel like most real fundamentalists actually have a more dynamic, reflective engagement with their faith beyond what the story showed.
Maybe im missing something or need to rewatch but I’m also just bored of the story of religion as a tool for oppression.  Like where is the Fremen liberation priestess engaged in critical scriptural interpretation and reflective spiritual practice? Maybe Part 3

later: omg also forgot to mention weird resonances w pro life stuff re: communicative embryo
