“I feel like a spectator in my own life.”

Magical. One of the most structurally, formally, and thematically inventive, bold, and resonant films of our generation, with an inspired lead performance from Renate Reinsve. Trier’s masterwork has me thinking about many things today. Is love an impossibility? Do people ever change? Are creative minds ever fixed souls? I think something I love about this is the fact that Trier stays true to the human spirit — his film asks more questions than it answers, and in a beautiful sense of still managing to find a shade of humanity under which it exists, breathes with a personal sense of autonomy, language, and character that feels so entirely human and so vastly rare in our current film landscape. I think it’s magical, it’s special, and it’s all kinds of beautiful when cinema feels both so personal and universal at the same time, in the same sense of possessing such a personal sense of self, and yet very much remaining resonant in a larger human sense. It’s an awakening to be more ‘you’ with each ing day, if not wholly becoming that today — don’t settle for being a spectator in your own life. Just run out there, like Julie does in her motionless dreamworld in what is one of my favourite scenes in all of film, and live.
