I read an Atlantic article about Civil War in which Alex Garland said something along the lines of - the president had to have done something really terrible to unite Texas and California. Sadly, given how things have been going in the US since 2016, I can’t think of a single terrible event that would unite polar opposites in this way. Anyway! This was still amazing & stunning the second time around and even more interesting knowing how it would all unfold.
