Timmy Tim’s review published on Letterboxd:
Denis Villeneuve has simply outdone himself. As if the first Dune wasn’t as breathtaking and visually stunning as ever, this film sures its predecessor in nearly every single regard. It’s truly remarkable and is one of the greatest science fiction films I have ever seen. Not only that, it’s one of the best sequels ever made in my opinion and adapts Frank Herbert’s novel incredibly well. Although there are a few things that differ in of what happens in the film and the book, it didn’t bother me all that much. Everything still comes together in a way that is very faithful to the novel. Denis Villeneuve’s direction is stupendous and I couldn’t imagine any other director doing as good a job adapting Dune as he has done with this film. It’s action packed, it’s breathtaking, it’s loud, it’s mean, it’s ruthless, it’s jaw dropping, and most of all it’s powerful. The battle sequences are some of the best I’ve ever seen put to film and are incredibly well done. The visual effects are also SO damn good. Every time a sandworm was on screen, I simply couldn’t believe my eyes. The cast is phenomenal and ABSOLUTELY stacked with amazing actors. Timothée Chalamet delivers one of his best performances ever, Zendaya is crazy good, Rebecca Ferguson is out of this world, Dave Bautista is so great at being MAD, Stellan Skarsgård continues to be as nasty as ever as Lord Baron, Javier Bardem is hilarious yet studious, and it’s always a joy to see Christopher Walken. However, AUSTIN BUTLER definitely stole the show for me with his absolutely vile and insanely psychotic performance as Feyd-Rautha. Butler’s portrayal of this character truly emphasizes the wickedness of House Harkonnen and its beautifully harrowing to watch. The entire sequence that was in black and white was so good. And of course the duel scene between Feyd-Rautha and Paul near the end was one of my favorite parts of the film. Hans Zimmer somehow manages to transcend the greatness of the music of the first Dune and the cinematography by Greig Fraser is as mesmerizing as could be. This film is very epic and delves deeper into the political/religious aspects of the story while also providing much more action than the first one which focused primarily on world building, not that this one didn’t. In fact, the world building in this film is so much larger and compliments the action sequences perfectly. This is definitely paced better than the first film in my opinion and paints Paul’s growing hunger for power in an extraordinary way. All in all, Dune: Part Two is a masterpiece in every sense of the word and is my favorite movie of 2024 thus far. It will be VERY hard to dethrone this absolute beast of a movie as my favorite of the year. It’s nothing short of an exhilarating experience that DEMANDS to be viewed in IMAX. There were points in which my entire body was shaking from the loudness of the film. I am beyond excited for Dune: Messiah!!!
