Legend of the Eight Samurai

Now this is pure movie magic. I loved it. It's insanely thrilling, fun and exciting from start to finish. It has fantastic action and incredible cinematography and sets. And a great score that superbly enhances its adventurous tone. The climactic battle rocks. It's big. It's really big. It goes so freakin hard. No idea why this isn't one of the famous fantasy films of the 80's. There were parts that were surprisingly vile and cruel for a film that's overall…

Forbidden, carnal desires as the harbinger of disaster. Spiritual transcendence, but at the cost of how much of our decency and humanity? This transient life is a challenging, deeply hefty and thematically thought provoking experience. But it's not for shock value's sake that it dives so deep into its endlessly discomforting plotting, sexuality and character dynamics.

Sushi Girl was great. It's clearly inspired by Reservoir dogs, and has similar outbursts of violence, too. It also really knows how to build tension through dialogue and character dynamics. I wished the titular Sushi girl had a bit more to do. . .she's literally just serving as a naked sushi plate for most of the time. . .but she's key to the final few scenes and her role in the whole thing is very well done after all. Tony Todd is really great in it. Mark Hamill too. Cool cast, overall actually. It's a great little crime thriller.

This was nuts. Absolutely bonkers insane. At some point it becomes one big disturbing and surreal trip. It has a crazy plot, but even crazier visuals and style.

It gets pretty horrifying. Think the experiment scenes of Mad god, but spanning a much larger dose of the film. It has a similar hardcore cyberpunk vibe a la Tetsuo, and the bizarre surreality a la Eraserhead.

Its central ideas are quite something, and it's all explored to vile and demented results.…

Looks cool.
Cast cool.

Every time I'm watching a film from Studio Ghibli it's like I'm witnessing a part of the essence of life. The very basics of what makes life so beautiful. . .what could make life such a beautiful creation if only you to look into the right direction. Sometimes we need a little help. A little push. A simple reminder of an almost forgotten something, a sentiment, a memory of a tiny delight, that one sparkling moment on that one…
