after sleeping on it i wanted to add that i do think that this is a necessary companion and response in story and message to the first movie and its reception. both movies are obviously stupid in of filmmaking to those that know ball, but at least the second one has something to say. it takes so much more strength in this society and country to say that you are not the joker than it does to think that you are the joker or that the joker is cool. the fact that the first one was generally beloved and this one is generally despised is so telling honestly. the same people that drove arthur to his actions are the same people that worshipped his killing of 6 people are the same people that said the first movie was good. most normal adults that had abusive parents see their parents as what they are and vow never to be them, even if they keep fucking up they care about others and want to be as helpful and kind as possible. it takes a delusional child with no self awareness to think of themself as some sort of renegade sigma that treats everyone like shit because its funny or because hurt people hurt people. you’re not in a movie, grow the fuck up and find people to love other than yourself. everyone wants to glorify and obsess over psychopaths but its so much more based to it that you love the people around you even if its perceived by know nothings as cringe. they kill arthur for itting this, for being right, and for being human. but at least he had the capability for love and empathy and stood up for himself one last time in the face of enormous pressure from society and his girlfriend to be something he was not. none of this to say the movie is that good, its too many songs, they take 30 minutes of story that should have probably just been tacked on to the last one and stretch it out to 2 hours, todd phillips is a thief and a hack obviously, lady gaga cant act, i could go on and on. i just think the criticism that they don’t stick the landing is ridiculous because the landing is the only reason why either movie has any artistic value at least to me. sorry for the incoherence and the length this was burning a hole in me had to get it out my bad
