I feel like I left earth for 2 hours. Melvin Van Peebles wrote a really cool and funny musical. Then some combination of his love for French New wave and his distrust that just laying the camera flat to watch the numbers would be interesting led him to shoot everything like the total man he is. It turns a fun simple musical into something much more special and surreal. And the album is on Spotify. Highly recommend

I feel like the thing no one told me about this movie is how old Hollywood crowd pleasing it is. The jokes. The romance. The big old heart at the center. That tear jerking score.  Damn David I didn’t know you had it in you.

I watched all these years ago when I was deeply depressed and this one didn’t stand out but watching this one again with three friends on floorcouch including my 21 year old roomate who’d never seen jackass laughing hysterically the whole time unlocked a feeling like being a 12 year old lost scared kid laughing harder than he ever had for the first time summers here baby and I’m young again
