I reading the novel this movie is based on as a sophomore in high school and being blown away that writing so hauntingly beautiful could exist. Despite my love of the filmic arts I spent a long time thinking there was no way they could possibly do Remarque’s words justice. The 2022 adaptation proved me wrong. Three things:

1. Screw the haters. Sure it’s campy and weird and far from perfect but it both raises some fascinating questions in a way Black Mirror hasn’t been able to since the first couple seasons, as well as exploring the interaction between technology, masculinity, male friendship, queerness, love, sex, and questions of reality in a startlingly cohesive and empathetic way.

My second Luhrmann film after Elvis (which I loved) and I’ve gotta say, while not every choice he makes works, the kinetic energy of his filmmaking is kind of awesome. This movie is certainly full of flaws, but it’s wholly unlike any Shakespeare adaptation to date and I think some props are due for that originality and the risks taken, even if they don’t always pay off.

Also there were multiple Radiohead songs so I’m automatically a big fan
