"Talk to me, Goose."
Just like last year, the second Pride Month watch is a movie with Val Kilmer, but unlike last time, this is included more because of the apparent homosexuality of it instead of a character being out-and-out gay like in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - and you can probably tell by the way I phrased it that I don't really think Top Gun is gay. Like yeah, there's a few lines about hard-ons and the volleyball scene that can come off homoerotic, but it reads to me more as guys confident in themselves and fuckin' around with their homies than some deep-seated desire to ionately rail said homies. Gonna blame Tarantino's rambling speech in Sleep With Me for this one.
Anyway, it's fun! I hadn't watched it in years, and while I'll readily it that its sequel is the better movie, this has something Top Gun: Maverick does not: one of the best soundtracks in the game, baby! Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone and Best Original Song Oscar winner Take My Breath Away by Berlin alone send this soaring miles beyond what the sequel coughed up - like come on now, Lady Gaga and OneRepublic, really? That's what you think should go with Top Gun? Nah, man.
But regardless, it's a damn good movie despite its sequel mostly suring it. It can still be my wingman anytime.
