Hello. My name is Carol Grant and I'm an aspirant screenwriter. I've written many a high concept horror and sci-fi script. I've even had my work recognized by The Black List, the industry institution that made its bread and butter on buzzy high concept scripts.

I say this as someone familiar with both the writing and industry fellation of the art form: we need to end all high concept scripts for the foreseeable future. Not a single one can be allowed to be produced anymore. There's honestly a not terrible kernel of an idea here. Many trans people, myself included, have at some point believed that transitioning will fix us, absolve us of our faults. The reality is not so simple, and a movie about this central idea, of taking responsibility for your past self, could be a worthy one about the pitfalls of trans idealization, especially one told from a talented trans perspective.

Instead, we got the biggest hack in modern French cinema to tell it. And to him, the thought experiment is all there is-- and thus, all the titular Emilia is allowed to be. What kind of person is Emilia beyond the sociopolitical t~h~e~m~e~s she represents, beyond the questions she raises? Well... she smells like guac according to her son??? She is Mexican, in case these Frenchies didn't already pummel thousands of stereotypes into your skulls. Perhaps, by showing that Emilia still holds a vicious streak, she will always be Manitas and thus never rid herself of the stench of her former manhood. A regressive stance, but a stance at least!... That is, until the very end where the film quite literally martyrs her into sainthood, forgives her of her sins and maleness not through transition, but through death.

The central question, then — can a person truly leave behind their transgressions (see what I did there?) by transitioning — is flattened into a larger commentary on transness, and the question ultimately becomes, intentionally or otherwise, can a man truly be a woman.

Audiard offers no answers, not even an interestingly offensive "no, they can't." This is what attracts the middlebrow tastes of Cannes audiences and the Academy. A shrug that anyone can claim is so much more, an ouroboros of mediocrity that feeds the false intellect and faux progressivism of its sneering, navel-gazing target audience. It's a musical for people who hate musicals! A telenovela melodrama for white people, and made by white people! A trans movie for cis people who think tipping their trans Starbucks barista is enough to tell their friends they "know a trans person"!

Frankly, complaining about its more egregious technical aspects is far past the point. Who cares if the songs are bad or poorly directed. It was designed in a lab to offend no one and provoke nothing but solemn nods and mutterings of "mmm, important issues, yes." It's the cinematic equivalent of Nancy Pelosi putting on kente cloth. No one truly knew Emilia Perez. Emilia, as we know her, is more an idea than an actual person. And thus, she's allowed to transcend into womanhood.

What does it mean to capture something ethereal? We try with music, art, animation, dance, and all we can do is hope and pray that even a droplet of this divinity could fill our cup, that it would quench the thirsty hearts of our fellow mortals. To reflect through creation... is that not a true communion with God? If we can grasp at that invisible, imperceptible, indefinable aura that permeates our day to day lives, is that not a form of preaching?

For some of us, this impossible task is all you can do to attempt something as simple as even saying "I'm sorry" or "Good-bye". Sometimes, even the mundane bears the weight of creation. Some days, the only way to say "Thank you" is with the beat of a drum.

Just to give you all an idea of how cowardly this movie is, the story is all about a machine that can switch people's bodies and they don't even broach the question of someone going in the body of a different gender until the very end where it gets to be tossed aside. Meanwhile the whole first hour is just a schlubby straight couple being jealous of each other but without any actual bodyswitch cucking.

Str8 directors don't have that dog in them.

Watching both this and The Fabelmans within two days of each other, I am struck with thoughts about the denial of my and my siblings' half-jewish upbringing. Our house was a Catholic, evangelical house throughout our childhood. Judaism, despite being an integral part of my father's family history, was mentioned only in ing, a facet of our genes to ignore as opposed to the immutable truth of our blood.

I think often now of Nathan Fielder struggling to impart Judaism to his fake child in The Rehearsal. Of Judd Hirsch's crazy Uncle Boris giving Sammy some hard truths about pursuing your calling. And now, of Anthony Hopkins' loving grandfather telling a young Banks Repeta to be a mensch toward the other minorities in his life because he may very well be next on the chain.

Armageddon Time evoked memories I never had yet felt deeply in their potentiality. The Graffs talk often of hiding or minimizing their Jewishness to gain a seat at the Big Table with the Trumps and the Reagans, people who they don't even like and who wouldn't even like them. Our family never talked about this exact sentiment, but rather we knew it implicitly. That before we were filipino or half-jewish or part-spanish or multiracial... we were nothing. We were just default.

Who "Your People" are was not a question. In private, we were whatever depended on which relative visited. At school and in public, we were the children of No People. Just like everyone else and relatable to no one else, in a nation that rewards those who forego Their People for the abstract ideal of The People.

Jamie Clayton purrs each sensual line as Pinhead, immediately announcing herself as the best actor to fill the role. She and the film's faithful make-up and costume department are the only facets of this remake to understand the immutable appeal of Hellraiser, the innate queerness and forbidden horniness that gives Clive Barker's creation such vivid texture and incomparable feeling. Bruckner and co. have instead opted for the most heterosexual possible approach to the material. Their Hellraiser is infuriatingly uninterested in deviant desire and is instead overplotted and exposited into the realms of the numb. Its one interesting idea, putting the Lament Configuration in the hands of someone struggling with substance abuse, fails to marry this new theme with the Cenobites' kink essence. And while they've added trans and queer actors and characters, all of Clive Barker's original queerness has been wrung out of his foundation. It's the thesis of corporate #RepresentationMatters art: all lip service with none of the sensation. Like the film's billionaire antagonist, 2022's Hellraiser feels like a grimy club you used to go to that's been gentrified and sold back as that first fuck you losing your virginity to, but with a higher entry fee.

Keep in mind, I haven't seen every awful movie to come out this year (I have a feeling Saving Mr. Banks might find its way in here), but nonetheless...

• The ABCs of Death

  There are some really strong shorts in this horror anthology, but they’re all overshadowed by some of the most downright reprehensible garbage I’ve seen this entire year, and the film completely overstays its welcome at two hours of non-stop depravity. Even with the five or so good shorts to offer a brief respite from the worst of the worst, the shit was so shitty it can’t forgive the fact that I questioned my very existence watching this dreck.

• Gangster Squad

  A movie that strives for prestige only to end up with trash. Sean Penn gives one of the most embarrassingly overcooked villain performances of the year, but even that can’t save Ruben Fleischer’s misfire from the fact that it is simply one of the most boring things I’ve seen all year.

• The Big Wedding

  Even if this wasn’t totally unfunny, The Big Wedding‘s script is so utterly stupid and filled with near-offensive racial gags (all the more infuriating when the film’s Latino character is played by a spray-tanned white guy) that there is simply no enjoyment beyond De Niro’s shameless mugging.

• Broken City

  I still have a hard time believing I actually watched this movie.

• Identity Thief

  Squandering two comedic talents instead of one! Identity Thief is just as insipid, stupid, and unfunny as all the advertising suggested. By the time the film tries to get us to sympathize with Melissa McCarthy’s downright hateful character with a hackneyed subplot and a scene of her finally looking “pretty”, I already checked out so hard that it only worsened an already terrible experience. Dreadful.

• The Last Exorcism Part II

  At the very least has one of the most laughably “Please, please, pleeeeaaaassseee be scared of our movie!” endings of the year. The first movie was a welcome surprise. This installment basically kills any hope that this can be a horror series worth surviving.

• Olympus Has Fallen

  Two Die Hard in the White House movies were made this year. One was a genuinely fun, incredibly well paced film with nicely drawn characters, charismatic performances, a nice sprinkle of humor, and top-tier action filmmaking. The other was a grimy slog with incoherent camerawork and editing, SyFy channel visual effects, a deadly serious tone, an overacting Melissa Leo, and deadening pacing. Guess which one made a whole bunch of money and is getting a sequel. For fuck’s sake.

• Delivery: The Beast Within

  One of two worst-of-the-year picks I saw at the LA Film Festival, Brian Netto’s found-footage horror film is devoid of scares, likable leads, and only exists for a shocking final 5 seconds. But let’s be honest here, five seconds is not worth any amount of bad filmmaking, no matter how nuts it is.

• Now You See Me

  All sorts of thought-provoking questions were raised as I watched this magician heist thriller. Questions like, how was this movie made, let alone funded? How did someone write this script without so much as even considering how blisteringly stupid everything was. What was the thought process behind the absolutely ludicrous twist ending that’s ludicrous even by ludicrous twist ending standards. And how in the hell did this end up being a sleeper hit that now has a sequel underway? The more I look, the less I actually see.

• Elysium

  One of the more disappointing films of the year, everything just falls completely flat. Characters are non-existent, action is shot and edited incoherently, the allegorical morality is so base and simple you’d think you were a toddler as you were watching it, and the performances from Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley are so out of left field terrible you wonder how Neill Blomkamp even made a good movie with District 9 to begin with.
