This movie made me feel insane. Tedious scene after scene that seems to only exist to plant a seed for a narrative or emotional payoff later but when they come it's all the equivalent of, "How did he get that scar he's lied about?" Contains sequences that are surely at the pinnacle of the franchise and a first hour that surely represents the nadir. In fact, every expository dialogue sequence is like nails on a chalkboard, but when people stop talking and move into action, McQuarrie goes God mode. I found the submarine sequence to be almost unbearably tense and effective. And the biplane stuff is truly mind-blowing. I will forgive all for experiences at the movies like that.
