If you leave before the mid credits scene you're a FOOL

It takes a good while to get there, but the build up is great with a rewarding climax and epilogue.

Really? Did we really need another film like this?

I had a LOT of reservations about this film, from the marketing, to the very questionable press tour, to the subject matter and the perspective it chose to take on. It's well made/competent, yes, undeniably, but all this for what? What am I supposed to take away from this? You could say the overarching theme is war = bad, but almost every war film conveys this and it's understood to be a given.

In the Q&A Alex Garland addressed the wider criticisms that he avoids politics and messaging, and insisted his films are political; it's up to the audience to interpret for themselves because he takes an "honest approach". This therein lies the problem: there is minimal characterisation, which is understandable with the nature of this film, but with the lack of wider context and total neglect of the family whose house is invaded by US soldiers, it's sending the message that we should sympathise more with the people who are doing the invading (bear in mind this is based on the memories of Iraq war vets, and memories can be notoriously unreliable - some vets when asked about the events forgot a family was even present, which speaks volumes). He also acknowledged that Iraq war vets ed of their own volition, but mentioned they were mostly kids and posited that they all had other external influences eg naivety factoring into that. If there were even so many as two lines in this film alluding to that, he would have been much closer to achieving his goal of making an anti war film. I only have so much mileage for men screaming and wailing in pain knowing full well they were the perpetrators.

I initially gave the cast the benefit of the doubt because I understand that actors need work, but the group photo of them all with matching tattoos, and Charles Melton constantly bringing up his dad being an Iraq + Afghanistan war vet in interviews were so incredibly tone deaf. On that note, the end credits sequence was absolutely disgraceful. You can't show the brutality of war and then have a montage celebrating these men (with their faces blurred, no less) and end it with a group photo of the actors grinning and flipping their middle fingers.

I'll end my review with this: a man asked Alex Garland how he acquired an image at the beginning of the film of a young boy standing outside the actual house that was raided, and he responded with "I can't say".

I spent >2hrs of my birthday watching this when I could have been doing literally anything else.

I really think Bong Joon Ho should hold off on making English language films, there's a clear chasm between them and his Korean ones.

Mark Ruffalo's performance was horrific.

It's all very grand but I had trouble investing in it emotionally. I felt like a distant observer as opposed to someone being taken on a journey or told a story.

The second half completely shits itself. Not only was THAT scene completely out of nowhere (which is something that I know does work with some films), but the remainder is so rushed from that point onwards. The switch to the epilogue was such a tonal whiplash that the other people in my screening, who expressed how much they liked it during the intermission, scoffed. It also tries to tackle multiple issues at once, which results in the film acknowledging these problems exist but skimming over them without actually addressing them.

I loved the score, loved the opening, and Guy Pearce was great. Joe Alwyn gave the best performance in my opinion!

And I get that is still grappling with its nazi past but come on

I was very lukewarm at the beginning, worried that this would be another popular film I'd end up ambivalent towards. Luckily it picks up a lot and has some really great examples of physical and visual comedy.
It's very rare that a film has so much creativity to allow for a more than x5 recurring gag to not dry up, and switches things up at such a pace that it constantly feels fresh.

It definitely could do with 10-15 minutes shaved off (it lags here and there) but it's forgiveable when you know it was made on a shoestring budget in the middle of the woods.
The filmmakers are pretty cool too!

Another film originally watched on my phone as a kid - I guess I'm on the path to redemption now.

The amount of people who came in with popcorn and alcohol is more disturbing than the film itself. Wtf is wrong with you all

I'm gonna have to it something. The first time I saw this film was as a teenager on - shock, horror - my phone in the 2010's.
I'm fully aware of David Lynch's hatred towards the mere thought of watching a film on anything but the big screen, but as a kid with no bank , no laptop, and a burning desire to watch films that would challenge me, there wasn't much else I could do.

Now that I'm pushing 30 and having had already rewatched this properly on the big screen - though that was on an overnight shift, so it's debatable - I think it really takes something special to evoke such strong feelings of confusion and dread on such a tiny screen, and again with the inexplicable ability to compel me enough to keep my eyes open at 5am at work (and again on my laptop today). This wasn't my first Lynch film, that title goes to Lost Highway, but this is the one that made me consider myself a fan.
I received a much sought after 8mm camera yesterday/the day he died, so I'm going to name it accordingly.

RIP David Lynch, one of the best to ever do it.
