the main character is inexplicable — the kind of opaque personage who allows others to project their desire and animus onto him. he reacts to those currents, wherever they go. visually striking — ravines so damp you can smell the wet earth — with psychological intensity that mounts. god-tier confessional booth scene.
i saw this with JK at the metrograph at noon, and we spent the rest of the day walking around, getting dumplings at 456 shanghai, dipping into consignment stores, eventually going to tokio 7, and then getting drunk at superiority burger. it was a great day, and i didn’t think about the movie much at all.
there's always a sweaty sheen of exploitation to a sean baker movie and very little curiosity about a person beyond their external circumstances. looks like a music video before it starts looking like a travel documentary. lots of repetitive gags. it's never hitting as hard as it thinks. very boy (derogatory).
there’s a real care and intuition kore-eda has with children and how they are able to create their own worlds separate from adults. the ending is an explosion of sun and possibility. it’s gorgeous. i had one of those genuinely satisfying cries in the dark of the theater as the credits rolled.
