THE BEST CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE THAT EDGAR COCHRAN HAD IN HIS ENTIRE LIFETIME.

To them I will give within my temple and its walls, a memorial and a name, better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that will endure forever.
-Isaiah 56:5

How do you sur Sátántangó (1994)? How are you supposed to beat the best, most comprehensive, emotionally edifying, spiritually cathartic and humanly complete cinematic experience of one’s life?

Be real.

A REVIEW FOR MY #1 FAVORITE FEATURE FILM OF MY ENTIRE EXISTENCE, AND MAYBE FOREVER WITH A 99.95% PROBABILITY.

Don't read it as a review, but as a magazine article. This is the longest thing I have ever written about one single film, but it is also the only review that made me cry out of sentiment while constructing it.

Before starting to construct a modest, fully developed essay about Béla Tarr's Sátántangó, let's make a nostalgic resume about some…

Moving in a realm that can’t be described, that of intangible emotional connections with one’s own father and the allegory of packing as moving on in life. The strongest suit of it all, however, is not the underdeveloped message itself, but the animated transitions and the imagination to convey visual fluidity among every spoken idea. Dry, but purposeful, and a full league ahead of Lou (2017).

Essential, hard-hitting Jamaican iconoclast statement against the claws of greedy capitalism as a cause of the cinematic existence of neorealism as a genre, with none other than reggae legend Jimmy Cliff at the lead. Django (1966) becoming a foreshadowing parallelism is perhaps the most inventive meta moment throughout since both protagonists execute justice in their own . This is obvious and goes without saying,…

This is such a heartwarming family film. No sickening truths revealed, no uncomfortable moments, no graphic sex, no family arguments, zero violence and pure life lessons delivered in a pleasant way. Festen is a masterpiece to be seen in family reunions and it is surely meant to help relatives in distress and separation.

Happy Thanksgiving! Vinterberg is a genius.
