I'm conflicted with this because, on one hand, Anna Christie is one of Garbo's best characters. She's complex, written incredibly well and has some of the best dialogue ever spoken on screen. But on the other hand, that Matt bitch makes Anna swear on a cross that she wasn't in love with her rapist ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I will it (again) to not really being that into Greta Garbo movies (with a couple notable exceptions), although she is/was drop-dead gorgeous. Whether it was the writing or her own acting abilities, a lot of the roles I've seen her in so far have had her coming across as rather stilted at times, as if stifled by her own glamour. While she does look attractive as Anna Christie, the source material by Eugene O'Neill was very strong and much more compelling than the period melodramas she would end up doing later. Catholics vs. Lutherans in an alcoholic republic. An American tradition. Caveats and asterisks all over this review. An achievement, years in the making, to get this shy, perpetually tired oddball to speak into a hanging mic. Don’t get me wrong, she put on a brave face: “If they want me to talk, I’ll talk,” she remarked after wrapping up The Kiss. But make no doubt about it, she was nervous.

Garbo talks! And not only that, it's through the wonderful words of screenwriter s Marion! I was only really interested in watching this film because of these two ladies, so I'm satisfied in that regard, even if the end product is kinda dull.

Very well acted, not just by Garbo but the cast as a whole, but at the same time you've got that residual 1929 awkwardness when it comes to the transition to sound. They haven't quite figured out pacing, making this less than 90 minute movie just drag on and on. It's worth a watch if you're a fan of Garbo, but outside that not worth much.

Why I watched this one? I thought this was a Danny Peary cult movie that I had not seen. Turns out I got mixed up about that.....but this was the first Garbo sound movie...Garbo .

What this one about? Garbo reunites with her estranged father after 15 years and falls in love with a sailor, but struggles to tell them about her dark past.

My thoughts on this one? This is very very dated....but Garbo makes it easy to see why she was such a big star back then. One of my favorite character actors, Charles Bickford, actually gets to be the lead romantic role in this one....I did not know he had that in him! This was one of…
