so. people love Ninja Scroll. but like. it has some Flaws. mainly, it has a female ninja with a whole poison vagina and they ABSOLUTELY SQUANDER HER!!!

Because this is an Edgy Anime, Kagero gets raped a few times. Of course. But, she gets raped for ~plot reasons~. Old man Dakuan explains that anyone who makes love to Kagero will become poisoned and die shortly after. So, clearly, the only way this Poison Pussy Power can be showcased is through continuous sexual assault. Of course. Of course. Kagero could have weaponized that toxic coochie and purposely seduced enemies and it would have been cool as shit. But no. We barely even get to see her bust out fight moves on…

Another great film by Kawajiri that leaves it very clear why he has gotten such a great reputation not only in animation but cinema in general, with this film apparently being up there with Akira and Ghost in the Shell as the movies that put anime on the map for many people outside Japan.

Once again, the animation is breathtaking, particularly in regards to certain character designs (most notably the villains, who looked particularly awesome) and certain gore and horror components. To be honest, I didn't find the plot as interesting as Wicked City, and I had the impression that my man Kawajiri was recycling a lot of material from his earlier works—not necessarily good material, but rather silly stuff…

One action-packed, bloody, and sexualized animated affair!

I am not sure where the scroll part came into play, but this story follows a ninja who gets forced into taking on the Eight Devils which is a ninja team with supernatural abilities. For instance one of them is protected by stone skin, and another can unleash a swarm of wasps from their back. I sure am glad I was scared off of watching this in full when it first came out ... but I’m positive I’m still not old enough to watch this.

One of my favourite things to do is check the IMDb parental advisory content section which is usually done by a crazy person and once again it doesn’t disappoint:

“A short scene with a man having anal sex with a woman, she moans, not superbly graphic but still inappropriate for children.”

Phew.

100-word review: Supernatural ninjas murder a whole village to conceal a plot to overthrow the government. Another ninja team, sent to investigate, are annihilated too, except Kagero, a woman infused with toxins that kill whoever makes love to her. Rescued by ninja Jubei, the pair sets out to stop the conspiracists. Ninja Scroll, the film that helped popularising adult-oriented anime outside of Japan, starts off entertaining in its relentless brutality, but has trouble sustaining that remorseless momentum throughout its middle section. Jubei is comically nonchalant, and the animation is stony cool. The film’s over-sexualisation of Kagero is pretty cringy however.

truly repellent, a near perfect synthesis of the best aspects of pinku and blood-soaked samurai/ninja films with a healthy dose of black magic fantasy (including a woman who can fuck men to death via pussy toxin) — if you can get past how gnarly it all is, it’s rather beautiful

Violence.

So this film flirts with being edgelord, at times trying so hard to convince you that it will show you anything that it distracts a bit from the solid plot and beautiful animation. If you can get past that, Ninja Scroll is pretty much a triumph. The story is highly engaging and intense, the gore is pretty outstanding, and the animation looks really great.

I need to check out more from Yoshiaki Kawajiri.

One of the fire proofs for confirming if you should go deeper into the anime universe or not. A sensational, demon-plagued and action-driven classic with all the required elements to constitute a cult piece for modern viewers.
