Definitely in my top 5 all-time racist musical comedies about human trafficking.
Julie Andrews followed up The Sound of Music with a racist, sexist musical comedy about orphan women being kidnapped and sold into slavery. Certainly some of the tunes are catchy, but holy fuck.
If somewhat uneven, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a total delight filled with jazzy songs, vibrant sets and extreme self awareness. There’s always gonna be a sense of nostalgia from watching classic musicals but it’s clear that people were fond of the roaring, screwball like 1920s in New York and this film pays tribute to that era with so much chaotic energy.
There are so many clever jokes implemented within the character of Millie as she is quite mischievous and dirty and the film does a fabulous job at expressing her thoughts in a unique way. Julie Andrews really sells it as she brings so much ion and enthusiasm to a role that could’ve easily been phoned in by many actresses. She holds this seemingly unrealistic story together by understanding how to use artificiality within her depth to ensure that the film doesn’t take itself seriously.
And Carol Channing screaming “raspberries!!!” whenever on screen was hilarious and never got old.
Why does this have to have the absurdly racist 'Chinese white-slaver sex traffickers' plot? Why couldn't we just enjoy James Fox limpwristing his way through dance numbers in drag, Julie Andrews' obsession with how necklaces hang on other girls' chests, and Carol Channing as an insatiable human cannonball?
Human trafficking! But also an elevator that runs on tap-dancing!
You have this unbeatable trio of Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, and Carol Channing, and you completely waste them with this horrible, racist plot. YOU FUCKED UP BIG TIME!
"Thoroughly Modern Millie" is a 1967 George Roy Hill musical comedy. Starring Julie Andrews in the central role after her very established roles in "Mary Poppins" (1964) and "The Sound of Music" (1965), Andrews had already worked with director George Roy Hill in "Hawaii" (1966) on year prior. Personally, I, myself have not seen "Hawaii" but it appears to be more of a grandiose epic in nature, with "Thoroughly Modern Millie" being far more musical tone that coincided with Andrews direct area of success. This movie is about racism and Julie Andrews' boobs getting in the way of her beads. (5 stars for all the ladies)
Deeply wish this movie was only a romantic comedy with Julie Andrews being an absolutely gem and an elevator that runs on tap dancing instead of unending racism.
