Batman: Hush

2019

★★

Another lacking DC animated film, that translates the story relatively faithfully (until a rushed last act) but without the intended emotional impact. Arguably one of the most dramatic tales to adapt, you could make an exciting film out of this, especially given that it features so many established characters, but this 80-minute feature barely has enough room to give many of them anything more than cameo appearances, resulting in a narrative that largely flows from one fight scene to the next. The flaws of these films continue, with iffy voice acting of comically stiff dialogue (Bruce Thomas as Gordon is especially poor), and gratuitous swearing and gore to justify itself as being adult but feels out-of-place. The animation is easily the weakest spot, with very basic designs and backdrops despite the attempted scale of the plot, with a noticeably choppy appearance because they're done at low framerates and edited poorly, especially outside of the action sequences. Hush feels like a waste of a perfectly good story, and once again feels like it will only appeal to hardcore comic fans, but virtually no one else.
