An unashamedly earnest film—one both learned and ebullient—that is neither overly-sentimental nor cloyingly reverent; an easy choice for a Top 5 Spielberg picture that continues to improve with time and repeat viewings; far too quickly dismissed by boorish ignorami and des critiques de cinema steeped in the pernicious irony of 21st century online discourse; some of the absolute best work from Spielberg, screenwriter Tony Kushner, editor Michael Kahn, and cinematographer Janusz Kaminski in the last two decades, both individually and…

The Bricklayer

The action is mediocre and the writing is tremendously rote, but the filmmaking is at least competent on a technical level. This, of course, means "The Bricklayer" is the best film that Renny Harlin has made in some time. Aaron Eckhart is the only person who knows what type of film this SHOULD be and he's not even trying very hard. Needed 30% more juice from director Renny Harlin and a better script. Poor Tim Blake Nelson looks like he hasn't slept in weeks in all of his scenes.

Equal measures pensive and brutal, this is a beautifully shot modern Western with an incredible lead performance by Tim Blake Nelson. I don't think I've ever seen the man deliver anything less than a great performance before, but he's really spectacular here.

Great on-location shooting, with lots of natural lighting. The score is pretty subdued, but effective when needed.

There's a story beat in the final act that I'm not quite sure I loved, but otherwise I enjoyed every other aspect of this film.

Hollywood wunderkind and self-appointed Renaissance man James Franco s the roster of those brave enough to adapt author Cormac McCarthy’s rich, distinctive prose. With that, James Franco (alongside co-writer Vince Jolivette) delivers “Child of God,” based upon the 1973 novel of the…
