"The Gang Ends the Cold War"

Hot diggity damn, this one is a slapper. They got Nicholas Meyer back in the directors seat to make perhaps the most conspicuous sci-fi thriller about the end of the actual Cold War at the end of the 1980s (and we are better off for it). Hell, it even hearkens back to post-WWII movies about the re-shaping of Europe. Intrigue! Drama! Klingons bleeding Pepto Bismol! I love the decision to delve into the paranoid…

"The Gang Saves the Whales"

Easily the goofiest Star Trek entry yet (at the time of release), a little bit like Trek Does Douglas Adams, what with the whales and fish-out-of-water humor when the Enterprise crew are on 1980s Earth via time travel. However, it's the kind of goofiness I like to see from my 80s science fiction—I just can't help but love those fucking whales. Time travel? Come on, too damn fun. Also, the mom from Chucky is in…

"The Gang Adopts a Child"

While it doesn't have quite the same ponderous, wonder-filled reverence of the first Star Trek film, The Search for Spock was still terrifically engaging and, honestly, more interesting overall than The Wrath of Khan. So far, I think this is the Platonic ideal of a Star Trek film—it's the right balance of action and adventure with amazing character moments, there are real emotional and personal stakes for the characters, and it maintains the focus on…

"The Gang Creates New Life"

The same awesome visual and auditory spectacle as the first film, but with a little more sauce. Really enjoyed this one.

EDIT - 5/16

Okay, I didn't have a ton to say immediately after watching, but after some further reflection, I am actually less impressed with this than I thought I would be, considering its reputation. Of course, I still enjoyed the film quite a bit, even if James Horner's score is just a little…

"The Gang Finds Non-Organic Life"

In spite of my relative unfamiliarity with Star Trek: The Original Series, having only ever seen a handful of episodes on TV, I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to!

It certainly has a ponderous pace and the writing can occasionally be a bit dull, but I was absolutely delighted the entire way through by the bombastic score and the stunning array of visual effects.

Looking forward to checking out the rest of…

Surprisingly still funny after at least a decade of not watching it. Doesn't feel like a Farrelly Brother's film, which works in it's benefit.
