Wynand Olivier’s review published on Letterboxd:
Didn’t realise how terrible it is, till just before the 2 hour mark when Julia Roberts’ crazy white woman character and Myha’la’s take-no-shit Black chick get shouty at each other in a shed and then start monologuing and it’s one of the worst scenes I’ve seen this year. Forced, fake, awkward acting and bland, uninspired writing.
The dialogue is generally pretty atrocious and some strange choices in line delivery (the way Julia Roberts says “I fucking hate people” sounded particularly peculiar and I couldn’t ignore it).
There are some other pretty nifty scenes (the Teslas) and then again most others not so much. I actually loved the ending. Hilarious. I was rooting for Rosie from the start and I think the actress playing her did a decent job.
If you like your movies to feel like you’re on a virtual reality rollercoaster, with a subtext that is not sub at all, this could be your jam. Hey mom, look what I can do with a camera and an adaptation of a decent novel!
The book is better, big surprise.
