Well, I loved it. I'm a sucker for English steampunk adventure, what can I say? I still want to read the book series.

As a theatre kid/mom, I know I have to see this. I desperately want to see this. I have been waiting for years to see this. And it's on PBS streaming right now.
As a person who has depression and two sons, I'm terrified it will destroy me.

"How ba-a-a-ad can it be?" Real bad.
Completely lost all the charm of the original book. How do you do that?

Just not my kind of thing. I'm sure it's great if you love martial arts fights. They are amazing.

Yep. It's the kind of film you understand better the second (or third) time. Brilliant.

I wanted a movie to keep me awake. It did that. It was fun and interesting, but not very scary. And I am easily scared, so if it's not scary to me--you've failed pretty bad. Too many places where I said, "Why didn't they just do this?" He ain't Hitchcock.

What bugged me the most is that there's a really easy fix. I thought they were building to this, but then they weren't. The wife could be in on it. She could be controlling Cooper the way his mother did. Alison Pill is the perfect actress to do this too. If that last conversation had been different, it would have saved the film.

(I keep coming back to write another paragraph.) And another thing! ....Why did he let us know who he was so early on? Such an obvious mistake. Let us fall in love with this dad, and THEN reveal who he is. Maybe other people did, but it takes me longer to trust middle aged white men.

(Yep. One more.) At first I was like, "Well done using tasers instead of guns!" I was so thrilled. But then I realized he just did that so Cooper could get away. And he's actually saying they should have used deadly force. Of course, in real life they would have. And that's another reason it feels unbelievable.

After seeing this film at least ten times, I actually saw something new this watch: When Sarah first turns back to the room after Toby is taken, you can see the rocking horse moving slightly. Ooooooo! Never noticed that before.

Justice for Mary Bennett! This version shows Mary frowning when Collins chooses Charlotte, and that's what I always thought: Why didn't he choose Mary? They'd be perfectly awkward together!

I liked this a ton more this time! I think maybe the first time I saw it I wasn't paying attention. There are some amazing shots in here, and the pacing is perfect. It's really interesting to watch it after watching the 1995 one a few weeks ago. Different choices were made, but they are all good. I like the director's zoom in on a hand movement or a small facial motion to express something. It's almost too obvious, but I think it's something you would notice if you were in the room, so I'm gonna let it slide. I also liked how he made the ballroom noisy. I like that kind of realism.

Donald Sutherland is the perfect Mr. Bennett. The first time I watched, I wasn't impressed by Matthew MacFadyen as Darcy, but this time I could see the subtleties in his performance. I wish this Elizabeth had more to say to express her intelligence. Her lines are mostly used to gossip or talk to Darcy, so we don't get an idea of her intellect, which the 1995 does. But that also has more time. In the same vein, this one hardly mentions Wickham. He only has a few lines before Lydia runs off with him. But when you only have 2 hours, it's hard to get in the whole book.

I disagree with the reviewers who say it's a bad script or story. I thought the story was great. I was always wondering how they were going to get out of it. I was surprised at the twists. I think the directing and pacing was off because it was a play made into a film. They pace differently, especially when you add outdoor scenes.

My issue with it was the Janet-Larry relationship. My disbelief showed up and would not be suspended at the idea that Larry would be interested in Janet when he had his beautiful, young, blonde fiancee. Larry and Janet look like there's a 20-year age difference. Turns out the actors are only twelve years apart. But still, when Chris mentioned her "attractive boss" I was like, "Who? Where?" I would like to believe there are some young men who would be attracted to Bette Davis at this age, but....I am skeptical.

I thought all the acting was great--especially the men playing George and the Doctor. I think it could have been really good with a different director.

This is so great because it humanizes Leonardo and tells us he faced the same obstacles artists face today: bureaucracy, war, politics, homophobia, and his own ADHD (that last is my speculation because he had so much trouble finishing things and hyperfocus).

Also, he knew how horses ran centuries before Eadweard Muybridge took his pictures. And how aerodynamics worked long before anyone else had figured it out. (even though his machines didn't work.) Not to mention human anatomy and engineering. Just imagine what he could have done if he had had access to film!

Someone at Amazon Prime is either getting fired or getting a raise, because they hooked up this version of the film to the House on Haunted Hill listing. Good luck, whoever you are! I had fun.

Gothic Steampunk Little Princess meets Oliver Twist.

This was kind of okay until the third act when it went totally off the rails. After escaping the workhouse, Instead of the kids finding their way to London and getting help from adults, they take a carriage back to the house, and the villain chases them on, I kid you not, a steam-powered sleigh! If there's one thing I was not expecting in this film....
But don't worry, the baddies get eaten by wolves. So that's all right. (and they're real wolves, not CGI. Pretty scary.)

There's some great camp acting from the villains, Stephanie Beacham, Mel Smith, and Geraldine James. And I have to say the kid actors are not as bad as most in 1989.

It's a shame it doesn't have any of the charming writing and gothic despair of the book. I was really worried for these kids when reading it, despite all the very convenient and predictable plot twists. They get whipped and starved and frozen and get sick in the book! You can't put that in a 1980s film. I missed the camaraderie of Bonnie and Silvia the most. In the book they are best friends, and in the film they are bickering all the time. You can definitely skip this one and read the book.

I never thought hearing Klingon could make me cry, but....

This was incredible. I love her so much. I want to NOT give her a hug.

I'll give it two stars just for David Warner and Richard Kind. But please only watch the MST3K version. Production values are....lacking.

For people complaining about the casting of Darcy and Elizabeth: My friends, that is what 6 years of marriage and a child will do to you. Not to mention having a murder on the estate! Come on! They may not be as calm and collected as when they were first falling in love. These actors were amazing! And I loved the cinematography as well--of course that's easy when you have such beautiful places!

Hooray for gay rights! Hooray for trans rights! Hooray for Robert Preston and Julie Andrews who are both delightful.
But I'm afraid these aren't my kind of songs. And it's not really a musical if all the songs are on stage. So it's just kinda ok for me.

Show me another film that is both a Christmas movie and an Easter movie at the same time.

(oh wait. That's actually just any Jesus film, isn't it? But most don't cover his birth, so maybe not.)

This film did not have its songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. In fact, I've never seen a film with such a lack of songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Lin-Manuel Miranda was physically and spiritually absent from this film. I went looking for him and he wasn't there. The ocean was begging for Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Rock wanted to sing with Lin-Manuel Miranda. Heck, we all did! But this film's songs were absolutely, clearly, emphatically, entirely NOT written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Lin-Manuel Miranda did not even sneeze in this film's direction. I miss Lin-Manuel Miranda. I want Lin-Manuel Miranda to write songs for my life so that I have the courage to abandon my family and ride a canoe into the ocean by myself with a pig and a chicken. Or set up the economics of an entire nation. Either way. I'm not picky.

Okay, kids, I saw the youtube version today. I love this show! I love the music and the puppets and the set and the story! The cast was brilliant! And those troll puppets? SO. Incredible.

( that Nick told us this one wouldn't be very funny. It's a magical fairy tale. Good conquers evil, and there's lore. I hope we hear more about the Nine Gods.)

I have two teensy weensy notes.

Back off! Still too many close-ups. We want to see that incredible set and the lighting, especially in this one. The Forest Queen looks even more magical with the set around her. Scenes look better with framing. Let us see the whole stage occasionally. The lighting, production, and set design were so great, and we hardly got to see any of it in the proshot. It makes me sad.

It was missing Brian Holden. Everything is better with Brian Holden. :)

I am as surprised as you that all those old Disney live action films are based on books!

Thank you for enabling a disabled, unemployed children's librarian. I have seen about half the films and read about half the books (though there are many repeats).

All suggestions are welcome AFTER reading the guidelines below.

1. I'm going to stick to feature films in English otherwise I'd be here all year.

2. "Children's books" includes picture books and middle grade fiction. Not comics or Young Adult.

3. I will include fairy tales, folk tales, mythology, and legends as long as there are books written for children about them. So Robin Hood and Mulan are both acceptable. However, The Three Musketeers was not written for children, so it is not included. This gets a little sticky with some old stories that weren't originally written for children, but became children's classics, like Treasure Island or Little Women. So you'll have to give me some grace on what I include or don't.

4. Regarding Sequels: I'm restricting the list to movies that are actually based on books. So all the Winnie-the-Pooh sequels (The Tigger Movie etc.) are not here because the stories are not in the books (See also Paddington, Stuart Little, and Mary Poppins Returns). The films can be wildly different from the books, but they have to be generally based on specific books, not just take the characters and write their own story. So no sequels unless they are based on sequel books (like Return to Oz, which is based on the book Ozma of Oz).

5. Some stories (Cinderella, Heidi, Alice in Wonderland, Huckleberry Finn, Wizard of Oz) have many, many film adaptations. I have only included the most popular films. For more, see my list: We're Off to See the Oz Films.

And when Ella sends him away, he asks, "I am still an honorable knight?" just as Didymus asks Sarah. And then he says, "Should you need us..." just as he says to Sarah at the Goblin Castle and at the end of the film.

• Hocus Pocus

  The three trolls are based on the three witches in Hocus Pocus.

• Warcraft

  The Stepmother (troll) says she and her husband battled at the Bridge of Felldoom. There is a troll battle location in the game World of Warcraft called The Bridge of Vol'dun. Coincidence? You decide.

  Chorn's delivery of special knowledge from a highly intelligent alien race is a trope often seen on Star Trek shows in many forms. StarKid thanks "the crew of the Enterprise NCO1-D" in the credits of the show.

• Holding Up The Sky

  Obviously the Writers and Directors weren't referencing this film unless they have discovered time travel. But the similar topics of this film combined with a title used in the musical are remarkable.

  When talking with Sebulba, Ani says, "They've got the high ground." Obi-Wan says, "Only a Sith deals in absolutes." and later "I cut him in half, and I put him in a volcano," and many others.

  Moff Tarkin, the Imperial Officers' scene, the trash compactor on the detention level.
  The song 'One in a Million' references Han Solo's line "Great shot, kid! That was one in a million!"
  The song 'Long Ago and Far Away' is a reference to the tag line at the beginning of every Star Wars film: "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..."

• The Empire Strikes Back

  Song, 'Strike Back'. Tarkin says, "You'll find I'm full of surprises." Which is Luke's line.

• Return of the Jedi

  Emperor Palpatine, Jabba the Hutt, and Oola the slave girl. Chris Allen plays a second slave girl wearing Leia's metal bikini. The song 'With My Own Eyes' references Luke's line to Anakin at the end of the film.

• The Star Wars Holiday Special

  Pappy says that he is going to stay "until Life Day"--a holiday first mentioned in this "film".

• Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi

  This is not a film reference, but a book-based-on-film reference.
  Mara Jade is a character from Timothy Zahn's Star Wars Legends books, who starts out as the Emperor's Hand, but eventually marries Luke Skywalker. So Ani's comment about being old enough to be her father-in-law references that.
