Contrived waste of time. Has all of the pitfalls of a bad horror film let alone based on a video game. There are a few very striking images, but this is a hard no.

Really suprised I slept on this one for so long. Fantastic film with all the Spanish flair you can get that still holds up incredibly well to this day. Thematically it is still very relevant, maybe in a less literal making money off snuff way, but more the way everyone is selling their soul for fame.

What an unexpected surprise. Gory, campy, horny, but most importantly, it provides a stark lesson on beauty and acceptance. Really hope younger generations can learn from this.

More like ‘A Jack Black Movie’, but the sillyness of it all makes it fun and I laughed a few times. Also fantastic VFX! Curious what it would’ve been like with Matt Berry as the lead, the energy would’ve been totally different. Bottomline is I had fun.

What a breath of fresh air! Only two years after the abysmal 'The Final Destination‘, comes this. Fantastic opening, great VFX, great kills, fantastic tension, and a plot that brings the most to the series since the first one. Tons of callbacks and Easter eggs cleverly placed for eagle-eyed fans instead of fan service crap like more recent sequels of other franchises. And it has a great ending that brings everything full circle. My favourite of the series so far. Bravo.

Definitely the absolute worst entry in this series. It is plagued by so much crap: the overuse of "Look! It's a 3D movie!", unnecessary racism and misogyny, weird tone shifts, very bad acting, stupid premonition VFX, and a story that brings nothing new to the series. This is sad though, because it also has some of the coolest kills in the series.

Overall, this is an improvement over the second film. It brings in quite a few new ideas (and great callbacks and Easter eggs). And of course, the opener (and closer!) along with all the kills and insanely well-built tension. Product of its time, sure, but the overt misogyny leaves a sour taste 20 years later though. I had fun.

The opening sequence is still one of the best in the series (most of the stars go to that), and some really creative kills with great tension. The rest of the film, however, is mostly rehashed with a few interesting tidbits.

Blast from the past. Didn’t age too badly. The story is good enough, although a little too of its time. At least they have a NIN track in there. And the kills/VFX is still pretty solid.

This was fun. Tight enough script, albeit a little predictable. Beautiful production and costume design, cinematography that doesn’t get repetitive, stellar performance from Fahy and a lekker score.

Is it the best film ever? No. The best M:I? Probably not. Was I entertained? Yes. Did it deliver as a final send off of a 30 year franchise? Hell yes!

It is deeply flawed on the narrative front, and probably could’ve been 20-30min shorter, but the two absolutely nerve wrecking action set pieces is some of the best this franchise has to offer (one filmed in South Africa, my home). Yes, it has a ton of CGI, but you can totally see that about 95% of what is on screen is in some way filmed for real with very little green screen. As a filmmaker that completely blew me away. My numbers might be off, if so, then hats off to the VFX team!

My rating is definitely biased, but it deserves it from a lifelong fan.

Green Screen - The Movie

Watching this a second time I had way more fun. I think the overmarketing of the ‘big stunt’, Covid production delays and the shitty audience I had at the IMAX really screwed with the initial experience.

It is well made with stellar performances all round and a very relevant, very important look at the devastation AI might have on society in the near future.

A great look into the conception of the John Wick franchise. Must see for any fan.

Really enjoyed this. Great follow up to the previous episode that released eight (?!?) years ago. Just the right balance of humour and devastating darkness.

Proper return to form for Marvel, most fun I’ve had since GoG3.

What a wild concept! Rush, as always, delivers a stellar performance. Lithgow too, but his accent is all over the place. The director and DP managed to make a seriously mundane location look very interesting. All in all the metaphorical message it delivers is very well done, albeit insanely depressing.

Almost all of that goes to the animation team. Everything else…sigh…

Tight. Tense. Well executed across the board. The fact that basically all the archive material is the real deal and seamlessly blended with the control room ‘new’ material is quite the feat. Stunning editing that only makes you catch a breath at the exact right moment every time.

Sigh. This had some much going for it. The ultra stylistic opening, the set up, the cinematography and camera tricks with seamless VFX, great performances too, but urgh, all the rest is just so rehashed and done better elsewhere.

After rewatching this four years later I realised there is such more to this film than the overshadowed Covid hype/delays. 

Firstly, it is just the right amount of camp (like the old ones), with zero misogny, but not woke either, it blends it all extremely well. 

Secondly, the production design and colour palette / grade is probably the most beautiful a Bond film has ever looked.  It doesn’t come close to the breathtaking lighting, camera work and consistent tone that Deakins and Van Hoytema evoked with Skyfall and Spectre respectively, but this one is the first to really come out and say hey, look at this sauve man with his deep blue eyes and golden locks bathed in all kinds of delicious colours (and of course the rich tapestry of all the other characters). 

The narrative is a little paint by numbers, but each actor gives it their best. Still very entertaining with some andrenaline filled action sequences and it is quite heartfelt towards the end. 

Truly the end of an era.

Really hope who ever takes the reins now doesn’t screw it up.

Who knew that cultural oppression (all kinds, not just black vs white), the power of music, religion and vampires will make for such an electric experience. Great performances all round. Delicious old school gore with incredible VFX (Coogler clearly made sure that he won’t be burned again by bad VFX after Black Panther) and a transcendant score by Göransson (and many more musicians), he’s probably getting that third Oscar. See it on the biggest screen possible.

Ps. My only gripe with this incredible film is the outrageously inconsistent colour grade, it made some of the vampire eyes look cheap and skin tones were all over the place (in the same scene!).

The almost scoreless dread, isolation and mass hysteria is captured so well. And for a relatively low budget horror film, it has some seriously impressive VFX, even by today’s standards. It works so well due to the constant use of real make-up and puppetery in between. 

If the slow-paced editing was a little tighter, especially in scenes where you get ‘Screaming Woman’ constantly smiling/laughing while she is supposedly protecting ‘Screaming Child’ this would be right up there with all the classics.

A tight, well written, intelligent, spy thriller. Great performances from the leads with excellent cinematography and editing. This is all talk and espionage, not action, so stay away if that is what you’re looking for, but the way the dialogue and juxtaposing of images drives the suspense is very rare these days.

Side note. Although I love the majority of the Mission Impossible films, I would love to see something as restrained as this in that world again.

If you want a creative revenge film with very well executed gore and great action set pieces this is a 5/5. If you want a well paced story it is a 1/5. Not that the story is bad at all, it is actually fantastic with some really thought provoking themes, but the meandering slow burn for zero reason does cloud it quite a bit. Should’ve been a tight 100min, not 143min. Still loved it.

This one just came out of nowhere. Yes, it rehashes concepts that has been done to death, but the way it is executed is basically flawless.

The rhythm and pacing is some of the best I have seen in years. The combination of heavy on drama and subtle on sci-fi along with the setting feels quite unique (we need much more of this please). Thanks to great cinematography the environment feels surreal accomopanied with a beautiful subtle score. And the leads give pitch perfect performances. This one will be on my mind for a while. Highly recommend if this is your jam.

Damn, what an effective slasher film!

Not the best out there. But such a sleeper hit. Showing Wan honing skills that is on full display in Insidious and The Conjuring.

A fantastic example of craft and storytelling perfectly complementing each other. And absolutely stellar performances. Mind blown.

Suprisingly very effective, still to this day. Wish Spielberg and Hooper made more movies together.

I slept on this one far too long. 

Fucking brilliant. A simple, well told story with delicious cinematography.

This film is so over the top and vanilla, but it has a few very strong set pieces with some truly funny moments. And it was great to see a dystopian version of Cape Town. And so many of our local A-list stars being used as cannon fodder 🙈

Yes, it isn’t Parasite. Yes, the marketing hype totally overshadows it. Yes, the satire is extremely on the nose. Does it matter? Hell no. 

It is an extremely well executed scifi comedy with truly breathtaking set pieces and mind-blowing visual effects. And the story is great. Highly recommend.
