Midnight Cowboy

1969

★★★★ Watched

Scavenger Hunt #123
Task #7: A movie based on (or suggested by) Greek mythology

Naive Texan Joe Buck (Jon Voight) tries to ply his trade in New York City as a hustler, helped (?) by local con man Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman). Absorbing drama ably captures the seamy side of the Big Apple. It may be too dark for some, but the filmmaking craft is terrific and Voight and Hoffman are perfect as this pair of deluded souls.

Caboblanco

★★½ Watched

Scavenger Hunt #123
Task #11: A movie with a protagonist in customer service

Peru, 1948. Cafe owner Giff (Charles Bronson) is suspicious when the death of an explorer is ed off as an accident by the local police. Bears a slight resemblance to Casablanca (most obvious in the title), but this bland drama is nowhere in the same league. Bronson and Jason Robards (as ex-Nazi Beckdorff) do their best to keep this afloat.

A Bear for Punishment

1951

★★★★★ Rewatched

Pa Bear is honored by his family on Father's Day...whether he likes it or not. One giggle-inducing gag after another in this cartoon. The expressions on Junyer's face during the "My Pa" poem alone are enough to make this a classic.

The Blue Gardenia

1953

★★★½ 1

Scavenger Hunt #46
Task #4: A movie with a blue poster or the word 'blue' in the title

Following a night of drinking, Norah (Anne Baxter) wakes up to a hangover and the news that the man (Raymond Burr) she was with is dead. Is she the killer? Well-done interweaving of noir and melodrama, with some nice touches.
