Romeo + Juliet

1996

★★★★ Liked

Shakespeare featuring Radiohead.

This film gave me extreme Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas vibes, from the frantic editing, to the high saturation, to the neon lights—or just the generally crazed visuals all-round. I think the decision to keep the original Shakespearian dialogue is interesting, but alas I think this film would’ve slapped much harder if I was able to consistently understand what everyone was saying (coming from someone who’d consider themselves half-decent at understanding said language).

Of course, the soundtrack is fucking immaculate, beyond just the obvious Radiohead bangers Talk Show Host and Exit Music. But actually round two of talking about visuals right now, because damn this was juicy to look at; the cinematography is fantastic and so is the directing. Literally the only thing holding this back (heavily) is the aforementioned dialogue plus the fact that the original love story of Romeo and Juliet (which this film follows pretty much to a T) is very rushed in my opinion, although I suppose I shouldn’t be holding a play from the 16th century to modern standards (by which it’s still objectively very good, just to be clear). Look, the whole point of this film is to be a unique and crazy, but also thoroughly faithful adaptation of the play, and you either like it, or you don’t. I for one am definitely in the former camp.
