Fearless scrappy perfect imperfection
The definitive Lofi masterpiece of American cinema. Deserves to be mentioned with Citizen Kane and The Godfather, but thank god or L Ron Hubbard it’s not.
“If you wanna succeed you can’t be too good”
First time watching it since theaters in 2011. But this time it was the 188 minute extended cut which I suppose I prefer. Maybe I just needed some time. I was too hyped in 2011 and I thought it would be this sleeper hit that would bring the masses to Malick. Those were stupid expectations, but I think the extended cut also enhances the themes and gives it better balance.
However…
Crazy confident directorial debut, some might even say fearless. Kasi asks a lot from her actors, and they all deliver. One of the all time kid performances from Jurnee. Really cinematic for something that on the surface would seem more suited for the stage. Memories, dreams, perspectives rendered compellingly. Should feel way cornier than it does. Doesn’t feel like one I’ll want to revisit but very glad I saw it.
The Glup Shitto of return of the jedi king revolutions Spiderman 3’s.
Really aggressively applies weight after weight in the first act. Often silly hokey. Glad it’s the end. The plane stuff > underwater stuff.
Endings are hard when it comes to this kind of franchise IP endeavor. This is solid sometimes while also feeling the flimsiest since MI2. So it’s definitely time to go. Excited for the turn Cruise’s career is about to take. Now he can let go of this action hero stuff.
There was no indication that she wept.
Underratedly wild movie. Crazy movie tbh. Feels like a real turning point late in Marty’s career. These last 3 are built different in the way he tells stories now. Not sure I’d recommend this to many people. Undeniably long winded. But what an achievement. It makes sense that it was in development hell for years. Tough sell. The last 30-40 minute stretch is so good.
