Green Book played it way too safe. It should have been gayer, the characters more abrasive. The screenplay is a wasted opportunity that doesn’t delve deeply enough into some issues that define the characters and their world. The green book itself should have been more important. Some comedic moments are good, but that’s because this movie was directed by Peter Farelly, a noted comedy director.

Moonlight is a pure concentrated bullet of sadness disguised as an authentic A24 drama disguised as a sentimental Oscar bait movie. I love sad movies that make me cry if the tears feel earned. Moonlight earns every bit of those tears. This is the perfect movie to be my 100th movie of the year.
