Green Book played it way too safe. It should have been gayer, the characters more abrasive. Moonlight is a pure concentrated bullet of sadness disguised as an authentic A24 drama disguised as a sentimental Oscar bait movie. I love sad movies that make me cry if the tears feel earned. Moonlight earns every bit of those tears. This is the perfect movie to be my 100th movie of the year.

Drive-Away Dolls feels like the work of a washed-up director trying to prove that he’s still got it. He does not “still got it,” at least not on this one.
