„One day you’ll be cool.“

I’m not sure if it is even possible to express just how much I adore Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous, cos every single revisit just takes me back to that time it was released, to that time I was 17 or 18 years old, to that time I just experienced real life for the first time with all its different flavors.
When you’re a teen, your entire life is about wishing, wanting and progressing, about not knowing,…

„Every day in life is a first time.“

There are multiple depictions of family, perspective and generation in film. Good ones, great ones, only very few like Edward Yang‘s Yi Yi. This film manages to convey mundanity, everyday emotions, empathy, intimacy and conflict with such calmness, narrative complexity and visual delicacy. And that is just very hard to find. It is a film of great meaning and strong impact that just moved me in a way only a few films did on first watch.

The Ugly Stepsister is an inventive directorial debut that offers grotesque images, the aesthetic of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, satirical elements, both psychological and physical horror and the hypnotic dreaminess of 1975’s Picnic At Hanging Rock. It isn’t there to comfort, it’s there to provoke and confront, the body and the mind.

Mulan meets Kill Bill
Almost completely out of nowhere comes this epic, stunningly animated visual spectacle that just blew me away with its beautiful storytelling, its well-shot, well-choreographed and its very graphic action. It’s rich in detail, emotion and imagination. It’s simply a brilliantly crafted piece of animated art that I highly recommend. To everyone.

What an emotional double feature. Watching one of my favorite films of 2023 with Alexandre Lehmann‘s Blue Jay back-to-back was not only heart-rending, it was incredibly rewarding. Both films feel so true, so sincere and so human, they just don’t feel like films. Both films feel like nostalgia that you’ve never lived, but can still feel.
