What's kind of sad is this movie wouldn't have gotten as much ridicule if it didn't win Best Picture. It would've just been a little Driving Miss Daisy update that came and went. However, because it was deemed better than any other movie from 2018, it faltered under that spotlight.
Just looking at the movie by itself, it's perfectly fine. The majority of my positive feelings towards it are because of Mahershala Ali. Even in a kind of meh film, he's really really compelling. The story and it's message are fine, but there's nothing really unique or powerful about it.
I don't hate that it won, it's not the first time the Academy made a bad decision, but come on! BlackKklansman, Roma, or even A Star is Born were right there!
