A step back up from Asteroid City, this felt like more of a focused story while still retaining the diorama-like intricacies and overall quirkiness I like in Wes Anderson's other films.

Puerile gender politics; quantity over quality, listlessly going from one sexual encounter to the next, with the occasional score check-in. The three leads were moderately attractive, I'll give them that, and there were a couple of scenes that did what they were supposed to do. But I had pretty much checked out by the time Spring Finley donned a strapon and told her hookup for the night to suck it.

The last L&H sound short I hadn't seen yet. It was above average, with some good gags, the last of which made the entire journey to get there worth it.

Excellent voice cast and some good tunes wasted on a lame story and subpar animation. Shame that Rankin/Bass had to go out like this.

An insurance claims investigator (Paul Thomas) and his sort-of girlfriend (Anna Ventura) go undercover as a married couple at a swingers resort to investigate the suspicious death of the owner's previous wife. This is porn, so...not much investigating, plenty of fucking. Considering that this took place at a swingers retreat, there could have been more variety than there was, but what was on offer was certainly hot. One of the standout scenes was between Sharon Kane and some guy named Frank, and involved beads. Good lord, what a minx she was! Lisa De Leeuw, who I just saw in Pro-Ball Cheerleaders, popped up in this as well and played a more interesting character this time. Paul Thomas's character was named Nick, and De Leeuw talking in a low, smokey range made me think of Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct (although this predates that by about a decade). On the downside, the investigation pretext is resolved in a quick, dumb way and the real point of the story --something a bit more mundane but relatable-- was revealed. The actual ending was a bit abrupt, but oh well. This was the better of the two films on this After Hours Cinema DVD, and is one I wouldn't have a problem revisiting in the future. In fact, it's good enough that I would love if Vinegar Syndrome did a proper restoration (assuming they haven't already).

A lot of balling happens, all of it off the field... This was a silly porn comedy with the expected double entendres and overly broad performances. It was what it was, and it was ok. Highlights for me were a girl/girl between Candida Royalle and Jennifer West and Lisa de Leeuw taking it up the butt in the rain. Was not expecting incest (sort of) and pegging, though. And then there was the ending: more movies should end with a disco strip.

On a side note: IMDb has this as being 80 minutes, but the version copyrighted on After Hours Cinema's DVD is 69 minutes (giggity). There did seem to be some things trimmed out, but nothing that affected comprehension.

Reportedly contained some of Gene Kelly's personal favorite dance creations. If I had to guess (without going and looking it up), I would say the favorite is the final one, with Gene Kelly dancing through a medley of children's games/songs in a construction site. I mean, that was my favorite one here. The story is about a veteran (Kelly) who gets a quickie marriage and returns home three years later only to discover that his wife has basically moved on with her life (and didn't even tell her parents). The primary source of drama was whether they will reconcile or get a divorce. This is a Hollywood romance, so you know how it *should* end (and it does). The subplot about veterans' housing was nice, and allowed me to meet a wider assortment of characters who each got their little moment here and there. Aside from the musical numbers --which were engaging and delightful-- the overall story wasn't anything terribly special. Things happened in about the way I expected without any additional pizzazz or emotional hook. But while this isn't anywhere near my favorite Gene Kelly movie, I did enjoy myself.

A female CIA agent decides she wants to get pregnant by a senator, but he has trouble getting it up. More of a self-important political satire than an arousing adult film (although there was a fair amount of sex). There were several funny moments, and the leading ladies were attractive. However, there was no reason for this to be over two hours. And then there were the two twists at the end... Good grief. [Vinegar Syndrome's DVD has a commentary track by star William Margold, so I'll be sitting through this one more time.]

Sharptooth: the Pit Bull of dinosaurs

Nice message about kids' urge to grow up. Played a lot more "kiddie" than the first one, especially with the cutesy musical numbers.

Dull, but inoffensively so. Just watched this for Marilyn Monroe. (She was ok.)

A solid romantic comedy/fantasy from Cecil Howard and Roberta Findlay with, in the end, a bit of tragic irony. Reliably structured around the fantasies of two people (editors?) who work at a smut publishing firm. The most hilarious part was having the over-the-top prose they're reading as voiceover while the actions described unfolded onscreen. My favorite scenarios were towards the end: a black-and-white one involving classical music; and at the other end of the spectrum, a psychedelic circus orgy. This is my favorite from Findlay and Howard so far, and I look forward to seeing more from them.

Top 50 Unwatched #23

Finally finished the trilogy, and like the first one, the three hours ed by like it was nothing. Lots of great character moments (which led to more familiar memes), a deepening of the drama, all building to the epic Battle of Helms Deep. Just, wow.

An Australian softcore production featuring American porno stars. So ludicrous, cheekily so, that it almost works. Individual moments and scenarios worked for me, but the Dr. Freud character tying the whole thing together wore out his welcome somewhere around the midpoint. In any case, this was a mildly amusing diversion that I'll at least watch one more time (for the commentary track).

Not your average Christmas-type special. After being familiar with Yogi and a few of the other Hanna-Barbera characters, this was the first thing I've actually watched all the way through. Not bad, but nothing amazing either. Excellent voice and character work largely carried a story that went on for at least 20 minutes too long.

Decent for a late silent melodrama. A good, subtle makeup for Lon Chaney.

Basically a mid-70's Las Vegas travelogue with some hardcore loops thrown in for good measure. The semi-meta conceit of shooting a porn film was thin but effective. I can see how this might have influenced Jamie Gillis's and John Stagliano's later experiments with gonzo. At least now I'm done with the pornos in this Ray Dennis Steckler set, so no more torturously long extreme closeups of fellatio.

Doug Darush/Wayne Williams (Volta) looked a lot like Adam Driver. #ChangeMyMind

The most coherent of Ray Dennis Steckler's pornos (so far), although that wasn't too high a bar to clear. About as arousing as the other ones, too (which is to say, not at all).

Was wondering what the title had to do with anything, but it's explained pretty early on and is a pun on the scientist Pavlov. Beyond that, Jerry Delony was his usual goofy self, and the sex was set to German military/patriotic music. Giggity. Wasn't much to this, but it was still probably the best of Steckler's Nazi sexploitation flicks.

My wife is one bitch I'd like to beat the shit out of.

That one line and its delivery was the single best thing about this barely-a-feature excuse to showcase some BDSM and orgy footage. There was about as much story as the previous half of this After Hours Cinema double feature, although to its credit, this one was a bit shorter. And it had some schlubbier, hairier Rich Evans* lookalike banter with Annie Sprinkle. Also had Vanessa Del Rio in a small role, but you didn't get to see much of her in action.

* For those who don't know, Rich Evans is one third of the YouTube content creators, RedLetterMedia.

Maybe 5-6 minutes of dialogue tops out of 66 minutes total. Almost hilariously bad acting and a few good sexy shots aside, this was a poor excuse for a movie.

While not as iconic or memorable as the Christmas ones, the other Rankin/Bass holiday specials still have a charm of their own, this one included. The animation was quality, the voice cast solid (particularly Vincent Price as the villainous Irontail).

Never seen a titty twister done like that before...

Perhaps not the most intuitive place to start with Jean Rollin. Light on plot, heavier on the softcore, with a bit of humor for spice. It was ok and short enough not to wear out its welcome. I suspect Rollin's vampire films will better appeal to my sensibilities.

I feel seen. Or attacked. Maybe a bit of both?

Harmless (bland) filler with some pleasant music.

Top 50 Unwatched #24
(Going slightly out of order to accomodate my Lord of the Rings marathon)

No ideals. No faith. Just power. Although hardly novel or deep, this was the essence of Nazism/Fascism. Having seen Caligula before, I was somewhat inured to Tinto Brass's approach to this sort of material, making me that much more surprised when this turned out to be a bit restrained. Granted, there were glimpses of perversity and plenty of flesh on display, but the overall effect was more serious than I was expecting. It was almost not even Nazisploitation, which I kind of liked. So, while this wasn't some unsung masterpiece or anything, this was still quite good, and one of my favorite Tinto Brass films so far.

Death by Dildo

A hilarious riff on whodunnits that is my favorite Golden Age of Porn comedy so far. The sex was fun, but the clever dialogue and running gags more than kept my interest. Most outrageous scene was Kim Pope in a Nazi getup "disciplining" two subs. #TarantinoApproved

I hadn't seen this in over 20 years, and back then it was on VHS. So, this time, it was like the first time again (and technically the first time in its proper aspect ratio). This was (and is) amazing epic storytelling. Can't think of anything wrong with it. So many iconic moments (that have been memed to death), the drama, pathos, Peter Jackson's special brand of action, the score, etc. Everything was just right and expertly paced. Going to take my time getting through this trilogy, so I look forward to getting to The Two Towers and The Return of the King the next two weekends. (And then the extended cuts a while after that.)

Even after these first few Franco films (alliteration, hehe), none of them has really blown me away. I spent the whole runtime of this one waiting for some explosion of something (violence, ion, perversity) but nothing ever materialized. Perhaps I've been watching the wrong ones? I don't know. The setup for The Hot Nights of Linda certainly had potential, and there were several stylistic things I liked. Lina Romay was attractive (and frequently completely undressed). I liked the score. But as a complete work, it just felt like something was missing.
