Roddy Piper should have done more movies, unlike most of his colleagues that transitioned from “professional” wrestling into acting. Even with the most amateurish and cheesiest written dialogue, he’s able to chew on it and making it entertaining as hell.

The movie was, m’eh. Fantastic (but cheap) old school practical make-up, prosthetics and animatronics, that combined with Roddy’s performance make it worthy of a mild recommendation.

This has to be one of the worst adaptations about Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett on film, and one of Peckinpah's worst pictures in his filmography. Seems like a lot of people love it, and all the power to them, but for me it was just scattered mess of scenes with no clear direction or tone.

For example, Bob Dylan's character, a complete stranger that just happens to witness a major plot point in the Billy the Kid mythos, who later easily tracks him down in hopes of ing his gang, while lawman Pat Garrett has no idea where to locate the Kid. That's just one of many examples that don't add up in any sort of coherent narrative.

I've seen quite a number of films about Billy the Kid, including having read up on the true history about the man, and while every film has taken certain liberties, in this picture they chose to take the third and final act of the Kid's story and stretch it out into two hours, half of which is focused on Pat Garrett's so-called dilemma about his friendship with him, which even James Coburn can't seem to get a grasp on how to portray the character. That and 36 year old Kris Kristofferson was just far too old to play 22 year old Billy.

While I've come to understand that MGM took the film away from Peckinpah, I doubt that it would have been much different even if he had final cut.

A recommend only if you're a Peckinpah completist. If you're looking for an actual entertaining or thought provoking western, or a more historically accurate Billy the Kid picture, I think you'll find yourself disappointed.

Who would have ever thought that this film would have somewhat accurately predicted what's really happening in 2025. And neither the film or the real life situation are very funny.

Definitely a fantastic premise, but the execution was painfully dreadful. The script needed a major overhaul, and as much as I like Michael Moore, narrative filmmaking doesn't seem to be his strong suit. It feels like he needed the writing chops of someone like a Harold Ramis to come in and do revisions, and a producer like Ivan Reitman who would have been able to give Moore tips if he insisted staying on as director, both of which I believe could have immensely helped improve the picture.

It wouldn't surprise me if Moore decided to do a sequel or remake in light of recent events, or at least if we all survive the next couple of years first. If he does, I would hope he brings on some comedy writers to help hone the script.
