So I saw this trending on Letterbox and I thought “okay, let me give this movie a shot, even though I haven’t seen the earlier trilogy of movies.”
Just before five minutes in I realized that, for a movie set in 1988, no one actually looks like they’re from 1988. How can I take this movie seriously if everyone looks like they’re from 2024-5 with boxy 1970s-80s cars and glass bottles of Mountain Dew around them?
Another reason to also skip Letterboxd trending as well smh.
Has everything you'd expect from a Hulk Hogan production: enough creative control to hire his buddies to be in the movie, shot in Florida so he wouldn't have to fly too far away for filming, and Hogan putting no effort in his performance and hoping to sell tickets because of his name, brother. The only surprise here is Hogan made Sherman Hemsley and Mother Love unfunny.
I wanted to like this. I liked Oldboy. I had heard good things about this movie years ago. The movie is based off of a Sarah Waters novel. And yet the male gaze dominates this movie. In general, the direction and editing feels cold, and when you get to the sex scenes, it feels exploitative, as if the scenes were meant for male enjoyment. I’m disappointed with this movie, sorry.
The Clark Sisters have a compelling story but this movie misses so many opportunities to explore past the sisters and their family dynamic. The movie is so committed to their family dynamic, it doesn’t explore their rise to stardom, the music industry, or domestic violence within the family (and quite possibly a link between Mattie and Twinkie marrying abs). I’m sure I’m missing some things, since I’ve been waiting a couple of days or so to log this. But those…
