The First Omen

2024

★★★★ Liked Watched

I’ve never seen the first Omen, so I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to follow The First Omen. Having now watched The First Omen, I can tell you that knowledge of the first Omen is not necessary. This movie is so damn intense and scary, I had to take a break about halfway through. I can’t wait to see more from the director, Arkasha Stevenson, who has made one hell of a debut feature.

I guess now that I’ve seen and really enjoyed The First Omen, I should watch the first Omen.

There’s a shocking lack of ing in this movie. It’s also truly, profoundly silly and tonally weird. To wit, the movie pauses the gritty human trafficking storyline for Affleck to line dance and Bernthal to punch a punk-ass through the window of a honky-tonk.

I would absolutely watch The ant 3, if only to see more of Affleck and Bernthal’s dynamic. They are the highlight of the movie. The rest is freaking bizarre.

If you watched Dan Trachtenberg’s excellent Predator prequel, Prey, and you immediately wanted to see the same thing but with Vikings or Samurai warriors - this is the movie for you. I’m not a big animation guy, but it was a perfect medium for this balls-to-the-wall, bloody-as-hell action movie. It’s an anthology film that also expands the world of Predator in a super fun way. Can’t wait for Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands later this year!

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

I would put this somewhere in the middle of the pack of Mission: Impossible movies. The first hour is a tad rough, but once it gets going it really COOKS. There are two absolutely bravura action sequences (one under the ocean, one in the air) that had me on the edge of my seat. I must see this on an IMAX screen at once.

It’s a shame that the series never got back to the heights of Fallout, but it’s…

Soooo ahead of its time. Ed Harris and Jim Carrey are so good in this.
