i love watching a director's early work and seeing their voice and visual language work itself out. this is a pretty straightforward adaptation, but unmistakably eggers. there's an "antiquarian" in the credits for goodness' sake!
very dry but slso patronizing. some nice compositions and the documentary format works well with rohmer's naturalism. where nadja in paris treats its subject like a human, this treats them like curiosities.
my first time watching rohmer's six moral tales and so far the moral is all men are trash, which i can get behind. really like the unobtrusive camera work.
an enjoyable character study of a monumentally shitty dude. i don't know if throwing your trash into the gutter was normal in 1963 but i hope not. a good look at how we twist our bad/mean/cruel choices into moral victories.
