I get the criticism leveled towards this; the footage we see is cut for a predominantly white, cis audience at the time, and certain parts feel exploitative in their focus on drug use and sex work as something shocking. Especially concerning Venus Xtravaganza's unsolved murder and how that was presented. But I still see value in this as an overall positive look at the black and Latino queer community in the 80s, that much of modern queer culture borrows/appropriates from so much. How Do I Look serves as a better continuation of what this does, in that member of ball culture served on the film crew and prioritized queer voices first and foremost.

Manages to be both a personal coming of age story from Vera Drew, and a savage satire of superheroes, comedy, and the entertainment industry at large, and do both so well. The mish-mash of live action set against different animation styles is charming and campy to me. Worth paying to rent this.

As a kid, this was the first time I heard of Tim Curry, and my god I loved him. I rewatched this movie so many times growing up, as one of the first dvds we got (the very first was the first five episodes of Scooby-Doo) It's a good, classic mystery with the Scooby gang, with an iconic villain and a great soundtrack. I also didn't realize how fast the movie went until I rewatched it now, it felt like we got to the unmasking really quick.

Watched with MST3K. Alright special effects, but the editing is very confusing, and very obvious that the Merlin bits were made up afterwards to make this a longer movie.

Only watchable with MST3K. Insufferable characters, a nothing plot, and the sword fights recycle the same three moves or so, in every fight.

Watched with MST3K. I hope the woman here got paid well to model those freezers. The way they had her pose, gesture, and smile feels so uncanny.

Midsummer’s is a good choice for a stopmotion animated movie, and the character models are gorgeous. I was losing interest near the end, I took a break before Bottom & Co. perform at the tri-wedding.

Took time to grow on me, if only because I didn't know I was getting a mini, animated opera when I found this one. But it was fun, it's both gothic and goofy, and the animation style suits it well.

It's a good Shakespeare adaptation, given the Kurosawa period epic treatment. Also, I didn't know Peter was in this! I last saw him as the titular Devil Woman Doctor in one of the later Guinea Pig movies. Feels like a strange crossover between the film Canon and trash sov horror.

Before we got Poor Things, we had Alraune. A mad scientist creates a morally void, seductive woman by impregnating a prostitute with a mandrake that grew from underneath a gallows. Though she is generally causing mischief all the time, she really kicks it into high gear when she learns how she was born, and decides to get revenge on her creator. The beginning kinda goes slow after the creation of Alraune, as we get lengthy scenes of her being socialized in a covent school, taking a lover and running away, ditching that lover to a circus with her new magician lover. Brigitte Helm is easily the best part of this, she really commits to the character. You really get the futility of the men trying to control or possess her.

I don't understand a goddamn thing, and I don't like that. Though I do find it funny how Goddard managed to piss off Shakespeare scholars with this one. I have nothing else to say about it, though.

I doubted that this was a loose adaptation of The Tempest, but I'll be damned. It sure is The Tempest, in space. I'm not usually enthusiastic about Shakespeare, but this was fun. The costuming, the working practical props, and the animation on the monster really made this stand out.

As well crafted as it was, this movie isn't for me. Not because of the good/bad country music, I don't mind the genre. I just found the movie too busy for me. It is a good exploration of the American social/political landscape: our obsession with celebrity; how possessive we are of certain public figures, yet only enjoying them on a superficial level that renders them half a person, ready to be abandoned if they reveal too much of themselves.

#3 on my Criterion Challenge 2025: Directed by Robert Altman

The story around this movie is so interesting. This is the educational half of a larger movie funded by NASA, incorporating photos and footage from actual space missions, even having to rewrite and recast parts because of new discoveries from the Cassini-Huyguns mission. The full, feature-length movie couldn't be completed due to budget cuts. Besides the billions of dollars spent on the space missions themselves, they went with a star-studded cast, with Chris Pines, Samuel Jackson, Mark Hamill, William Shatner, and so, so many more. This was Casey Kasem's final role before his death. This is Neil Armstrong's only role in film. The whole thing was considered lost media until about 3 years ago.

So it's a shame the movie is so boring and uninspired. I'm a little forgiving about the actual animation; it's janky but it's a very nostalgic style for me. But the story is so basic, constantly stopping for the educational content. I'm glad it was found, but I can't say it's a fun watch.

It took me a few tries to actually get into this; I thought I could play Minecraft while having this on in the background, silly me. And I think I need to rewatch it a few times for a fuller understanding. Thankfully, I actually want to rewatch it, it's such a atmospheric film, about so much philosophical shit, but especially the desires of humanity, whether we truly know ourselves and whether we really want to know ourselves, because the truth may be a hard pill to swallow. It feels like a post-nuclear fairy tale of sorts; 3 men travel to a wild landscape for a fabled place that'll give them their deepest wish, they face many trials from unseen forces and the landscape itself, and ultimately the nature of the destination forces them to confront their own selves and why they're really doing this. Again, I think watching this again with that in mind may give a greater appreciation for what it's doing.

I was surprised at the serious tone to this TV movie. I didn't know about a young Indy TV series before this, and I was more expecting fun, Nazi-punching romp through the world,I thought maybe it would be a bit superficial in its approach to native populations. Instead, this is a pretty in-depth exploration of the ills of war on both sides, the exploitation of Africans for extra soldiers, and the rigid lines drawn by the men at top that don't make sense at the level of the men actually in danger. It also showed a change in Indy's beliefs from witnessing this all, though I confess this didn't mean as much to me since I started with the two episodes here instead of the beginning of the series.

Sounds like this was intended to be part of an anthology that fell apart in production. It would have been interesting to see what other directors would make to match or rival Buñuel's piece. It's a scathing critique of the church; that they are providing worse temptations to Simon than the Devil herself, they didn't take his service and his miracles seriously and undermined it at every turn. Almost played straight until the Devil shows up in anachronistic dress, and later takes Simon to the future.

#20 on my Criterion Challenge 2025: Spine #451-499

As the companion to the Eli Roth shark documentary I was going to watch one of his horror movies that he's more well known for... and then I ed he did one other movie that has nothing to do with horror. Based on a kids book that I believe my twin enjoyed, it has a distinct cover by Edward Gorey which always fascinated me as a child, yet I never made time to read it myself for some reason. For its target audience, I think this movie works well. Jack Black harnesses his weirdness to be the comic relief, but still give moments of tenderness when called for. Cate Blanchett is excellent as his opposite, a much more competent witch and friend of the uncle. And Owen Vaccario does a good job as the precocious child, still grieving the lose of his parents, starting uncomfortably over at a new school, and being thrown into this new world of magic. The special effects were pretty good at bringing this world to life, especially the clock itself at the end. Not a fan of baby Jack Black, but I kinda get the humor there. I work at a library, I see young kids all the time. They can have a strange, gross-out sense of humor, where pooping hedge kitties, vomiting pumpkins, and Jack Black reduced to baby body to piss himself fit right into that. Hell, I used to enjoy those sort of jokes at that age.

Obviously Nicole Kidman gives one of her best performances of her career in this. But I also think the kid playing Anna did really good, too. She played the roles of both precocious child and the line of communication to the other family really well. The claustrophobic atmosphere, even outside on the grounds was great. A good example of keeping it spooky by showing as little as possible.

#23 on my Criterion Challenge 2025: the 2000s

This review may contain spoilers.

A stop motion animated feature that unsettled from the first minute. A fictional propaganda film for a German colony/cult in Chile-based on a real one from the 20th century- everything the story presents must be treated as suspect. Maria is meant to show what they don't want in the colony: individualism, interest in things outside the colony walls, any concern for those not a part of the colony. At the same time, Maria exerts the beliefs of the colony as soon as she sets foot in the house. Everything in the movie is in constant motion, changing to assuage her fears, but also to what she is familiar with. The house looks less abandoned, more European even. but some items in the background like books will have a swastika on them. The pigs turn into black-haired kids at first, but by Maria's care she turns them into blond-hair blue-eyed youths. Is it any wonder she begs the wolf to take her back to the colony at the end? Maybe if this was a real experience we could say she was conditioned to think like that from growing up in the colony, that time would help her grow away from it. But this is a propaganda fairytale, she was never meant to succeed away from them. She is only meant to prove the security of communal life, to entice the fringes of society that the wolf too, could come to save them. Whether they'd actually be like Maria, or the pigs that get eaten, is up to the wolf and the colony.

#16 on my Anti-Criterion Challenge 2025: Olivier Lemay's I'M ALWAYS A SLUT FOR UNUSUAL ASPECT RATIOS

Honestly fun with how it doesn't take itself too seriously, but also plays with the tropes of both slashers and pompoms. A lot bloodier than I expected, albeit really fake-looking gore. Olivia Holt did a good job as the main hero. Mason Gooding was...there but he was hot doing it, and Holt kinda made up for what he lacked. The killer's performance both in and out of the mask is great, such a scene-stealer. It's a good movie to watch with friends.

Tod Browning loves to show us the backstage view of carnie life, this time with a troupe from Hungary, pulled into America by a guardian looking to rob his heiress charge of her money by way of fake stances. The seance scenes were the best part, giving both the audience perspective and what the guys are doing behind the to make it happen. The high society bits and the investigation dragged, though.

#7 on my Criterion Challenge 2025: 1920s

Just so you know, I mean that one star rating in the best possible way. This is shit. There is no excuse for the flat acting, exposition told facing the camera head-on, nonsensical scenes that serve no purpose to the bare-bones plot, and editing/sfx that resembles a bad vlog on Youtube. But there's an earnestness to all of Breen's films, that this isn't from a lack of trying or caring.

Pretty well written and acting overall, though the plot feels straightforward now because of all the noirs made after it. The most interesting parts were between the lawyer and his very young mistress, played by Marilyn Monroe. I had never seen her in a movie before, and I think she did a good job playing this bubbly, naive young woman.

The way that the conspiracy was presented screamed Qanon/pizzagate to me, which ruined any enjoyment for me. Also, you can't drop something like orca wolves and then not explain it? Like this is a wildly known fact about their evolution? I'm not scientist, but I'm not totally out of the loop, whose ass did they pull that out of?

I can't say I expected much from Batman's first screen appearance, but my god, they made him a racist S.O.B. working for the government. Okay sure, this was the 1940s, a bit of wartime propaganda to rally the troops or whatever. Batman gets to say a few slurs towards the Japanese villain brainwashing good, upstanding Americans; the villain Daka is played by a white man. But this Batman can't even fight without getting knocked out, he's pathetic.

#4 on my Anti-Criterion Challenge 2025: 1940s

A satire against the upper class disguised as a murder mystery. It's subtle, but everything we see is with the servants; if they aren't there to see it, we hear it as gossip from a different servant. They witness all the secrets the rich try to hide, and manage to keep their own, for the most part, so long as they do their job. The murder is really a backdrop for the connections between the classes. Again, it's subtle, it starts slow, and the humor is very British, so it might not be for everyone. But it's very well crafted, a lot of care went into getting the historical details right, and the whole ensemble cast do a really good job.

#10 on my Anti-Criterion Challenge 2025: 2000s

I was honestly surprised by the political background in this. It's a little on the nose, but it does give more of a reason for Bruce Lee's path of vengance; triggered by the murder of his master, then further fuelled by the injustices faced by him and his friends. Overall though, this is just a vehicle to show off Lee's combat prowess, and that's where it shines the most. The fight choreography is excellent, but the story drags when he's not on the screen.

I get why people really enjoy this, and I did like some things, but just not enough. For a romantic comedy, the romance sucks. Walter is a manipulative pos, and Bruce is a pushover. The only good thing they did is help Hildy realize how much she enjoys the thrills of investigative journalism. Rosalind Russell is great, she's totally magnetic. The dialogue is really sanppy, but so fast that it didn't stick with me. Maybe I'm just too stuck in a sort of "modern" headspace rn, but I didn't find it all that funny.

#1 on my Criterion Challenge 2025: Watch a film from the CC40 Boxset

Very once in a while, I find myself thinking back to Crimson Peak and wishing we'd do more gothic horror in this century; and my god, Eggers finally delivered. He's very good at crafting the perfect shot, getting the camera perspective precisely where he wants it, and only showing us just enough. It is both violent and horny, but leaves enough to the imagination. The design of Count Orlok is incredibly grimy, the way he feeds off his victims is truly bestial in nature. I'm surprised by Lily-Rose Depp's performance, if only because I didn't expect much from a nepo baby, and she did a pretty good job. I love seeing DeFoe go all intellectually apeshit as the professor. And minor spoilers, but just the silhouette of those poor children dangling stiff in Orlok's hands before being violently thrown to the ground was kind disturbing, and a good example of not revealing too much for a stronger emotional response.

Watched with Rifftrax. It manages to be both a standard biker action flicks, and slightly disturbing for unexplainable reasons. Some of the townies and lackeys were not right in the head. And I can't tell you they narrative reason for those specific characters to behave that way. It at least makes this memorable. It also took me a moment to realize this is a Chuck Norris movie, I'm not used to seeing him so young and baby-faced.

Great soundtrack for a documentary not focused on music. Terrible idea to watch this in the middle of the night when you're down with the flu. Wanted to eat all the garlicky dishes, couldn't make any of them.

This may be the most artsy movie that I've ever seen from Corman, and I lived for it. Vincent Price hammed it up as the egoistic, Satan-worshipping prince. I liked how they wrote in the Hop Frog story, the theme of that one works well with that of Masque, and it helps fill in the bare-bones plot of the original short story.

It's a solid adaptation of Macbeth, overlaid atop a modern criminal underworld setting. Changing the three witches into two corrupt cops who interfer in the situation to make their predictions come true was a clever adjustment to the story that worked very well.

This could have been a campy cult classic that I enjoy. It fits my favorite genre of edgy scifi/fantasy action movies. But I serious need more from Pam than just badass heroine. Any emotion, really. The closest we got to that was when Barb Wire finds the dead body of a close friend and kinda grieves, but literally any emotion will do. You can give a hot woman guns and a latex bodysuit, sure, but that means nothing without something to contrast the basass actions.

The mental decline and Nazi ambitions of a cremator, who envisions himself as a savior to those he cremates and kills. It's funny in a depressing way, as he appropriates Buddhist beliefs to justify his actions. Very accurate to the Nazi's obsession with spiritual beliefs, only so far as they can marry it to their anti-semitism and ideas of racial superiority Sometimes he has a glimmer of clarity of how fucked up he is, but he violently rejects that reality, and is ultimately rewarded for his loyalty. I also really liked the soundtrack by Zdeněk Liška, it really adds to the spiraling insanity.

While I do know about Les Vampires, I feel like I'm missing so much context of French cinema as a whole. I liked the frank portrayal of film production, and I love Maggie Cheung, but I kinda want to return to this after watching more French movies, and see if that improves my understanding.

Watched with MST3K. The costumes cracked me up, the sleeveless, caped vampire minions looked so stupid. The story is also wild, like with the threat of a female vampire coven using a prophecy to justify kidnapping a professor's daughter, they call up a goddamn wrestler to solve their problems. The whole struggle is to find their lair, and when they do, there's no fight! They won't let Santo fight a woman, but he can burn them all to death and boy he looked like he enjoyed it.

I like the premise of the documentary, and I don't mind that the interviews are mostly unguided, steered by the new Olympians being interviewed. But this was a mess in editing, and so many of the narratives get lost amongst each other. Maybe feature fewer athletes, follow one person's journey from start to end before moving to the next, idk. As it is, this was a disservice to the athletes.

A whole movie in Esperanto meant to evoke an otherworldly setting, except it just sounded Italian to me. Also, Esperanto was meant to be the international 2nd language to untie the world or some optimistic shit, so using it to make something feel more unearthly seems like the opposite goal, lol. And apparently most of the cast got the pronunciation wrong, too. The actual movie is fine, was really hoping for the demon women to win in this battle of wills, but even I knew I was asking for too much.

Mia Wasikowska is a perfect choice for Jane Eyre. Personally never liked Rochester, but he was the standard gothic romance love interest. Didn't get a whole lot of the wife in the attic, which I feel like was the big reveal in the book, and I was kinda disappointed in that.

It takes a long time for any attempt to take on the villain building a kungfu army for world domination, which meant more stilted dialogue than I preferred. Best watched with Rifftrax.

#8 on my Anti-Criterion Challenge 2025: 1980s

When I was about their age, in elementary school, we had a choir concert that would involve 3 students playing the glockenspiel for one song. For context, we never got to play instruments for concerts before. I was one of the kids picked to play, and I was so excited. But as we kept practicing, we kept making mistakes between the three of us. I was trying so hard, but I had trouble with one part. After a week or so I think, our music teacher said "that's it, we're done with this. You guys aren't serious about learning your part, no more instruments" I literally felt like it was my fault that the instruments were taken away, despite my best efforts. And we never got to do more than sing for the rest of elementary school, and I never found the motivation to seek it out after that.

All this is to say, I relate to Ayame a lot, and I'm so proud of her for seeing it through to the end, and happy that none of her teachers gave up on her or the other students like mine did.

Manages to get the mix of social commentary and wild kaiju battles right, just like the original Godzilla; it also keeps it's own identity thanks to the abstract animation cutscenes and a groovy hippie soundtrack. Maybe presents it's environmentalist theme a little too obviously, but it didn't bother me that much.

Pretty lackluster compared to the first movie. I liked that it had two separate attacks on Japan, and that it showed us how the people have started to recover between the two. Could have been shorter if they didn't replay footage of the first movie. Or cut the fight plane scenes shorter near the end, since it was 5-10 minutes of explosions and Godzilla roaring with no soundtrack.

A really tense courtroom drama about tje nebulous nature of the truth when the facts leave so many gaps. Very well acted, and the cinematography and sound design really emphasized the point by purposely not revealing certain moments, forcing us to come to conclusions in the same way the jury and judge has to. We want to turn to sorries and common narratives to guide us to the answer, but the movie consistantly reminds us how falliable this can be. Also, I'm impressed the dog could stay so still, looking near dead for like two minutes for a scene. Wild that Bradley Cooper felt like the dog would take attention away from him at the Oscar's, but was he really wrong?

#27 on my Criterion Challenge 2025: 2020s

Rewatched by chance, why did I rate this 2 stars before? It's a great coming of age story, with an exploration of sexuality that is genuine curiosity rather than pure lust. It's so much fun, my mom even enjoyed it. The way Wes Anderson films are framed is so strange and playful, like the scenes are placed in a perfect little box that we can switch sides and perspectives on.

Basil Rathbone is the blueprint for all Sherlock performances since him, he just exudes that intelligence and charisma. The romance between Baskerville and Beryl felt forced and rushed, but its such a minor part of the movie, it remains a enjoyable adaptation of one of the most iconic Sherlock stories.
