Following its selection at the Sundance Film Festival – where it won the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Writing – and a tour of Quebec cinemas, the modern comedy Two Women by Chloé Robichaud (Days of Happiness, Delphine, Boundaries, Sarah Prefers to Run) scripted by Catherine Léger (Babysitter, Goddess of the Fireflies) arrives in cinemas.

In this modern remake of Claude Fournier's film of the same title, the director and screenwriter paint an authentically feminist portrait of the times.

The film stars Karine Gonthier-Hyndman, Laurence Leboeuf and others.

For her sixth feature film, Anne Émond (Jeune Juliette, Nelly, Lucy Grizzli Sophie) presents Amour Apocalypse (Peak Everything) at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes - a romantic comedy set against a backdrop of eco-anxiety and that tackles the subject of mental health. Adam and Tina, two lonely, sensitive people, fall in love over the phone. When a natural disaster strikes, Adam embarks on a journey across provinces to Tina.

We caught up with the team at the film's world premiere. The film stars Patrick Hivon (Babysitter, A Brother’s Love) and Piper Perabo (The Prestige, Imagine Me And You).

Félix Dufour-Laperrière's (Archipelago, Ville Neuve, Transatlantic) latest animated film, Death Does Not Exist, made its world premiere at the 2025 at the Director's Fortnight in #Cannes! ✨

This Canada- coproduction is really much of a family affair, bringing together the three Dufour-Laperrière brothers - composer Gabriel, producer Nicolas and writer-director-editor-producer Félix.

Félix and Nicolas spoke to us about working as a team, and the emotions surrounding the film's world premiere. 🍁🙌

Synopsis: After a failed armed attack on wealthy landowners, Hélène abandons her companions and flees into the forest. Manon, one of her friends and accomplices, returns to haunt her. Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan reflects on his evolution from an immigrant in Victoria, BC to a defining voice in the international film landscape. Known for his provocative explorations of memory, family, isolation, identity, and technology, Egoyan’s films—Exotica, The Sweet Hereafter, and Seven Veils—have shaped the cinematic conversation at festivals like Cannes, TIFF, and even the Oscars.

Egoyan offers a candid reflection on his signature style, tracing its roots to his formative years within Toronto’s burgeoning new wave of filmmakers. He delves into the thematic pillars of his work, exploring how his personal experiences have informed his intricate narratives.

In addition to reflecting on his own craft, Egoyan speaks to the current state of Canadian cinema, touching on the crucial role of mentorship and the power of festivals in amplifying local talent. The episode also reveals the challenges, true stories, and choices that shaped some of his final products. He even reflects on the one movie he'll always defend and the ending of a film he wish he could rework.

Atom Egoyan’s Seven Veils is a meta exploration of storytelling, perception, and performance.

Reuniting with Amanda Seyfried after Chloe, the film draws from Egoyan’s own experience directing the Canadian Opera Company’s remounting of Salome. In his Maple Popcorn podcast episode, Egoyan reveals that he created Jeanine (Seyfried) not only as a reinterpretation of Salomé but as a reflection of his own artistic journey.

Beyond film, Egoyan has directed numerous operas, including Salome, Così fan tutte, and Jenůfa for the Canadian Opera, Vancouver Opera, and Pacific Opera Victoria. His deep understanding of the medium elevates Seven Veils beyond a backstage drama—it’s a meditation on trauma, storytelling, and artistic struggle.

Speaking with Seyfried and Egoyan, they emphasized the film’s layered complexity and their evolving creative partnership.

Thirty years of friendship is a rare gift. For Sandra Oh and Mina Shum, that bond began with Double Happiness, a landmark in Vancouver filmmaking and a defining exploration of identity within Canada’s multicultural framework. Oh’s portrayal of Jade—a young actress balancing tradition and ambition—remains as relevant today as it did in 1994. 
 
Since then, the two have collaborated on Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity, a magical realist tale that explores fate versus free will, and Meditation Park, a coming-of-age story for a woman in her sixties. Shum’s films, often set in Vancouver, reflect the deep cultural and emotional landscapes of their characters. 
 
But filmmaking is more than what you see on screen—it’s the unseen labour, the collaboration, the search for financing, in an industry that is constantly evolving. In Canada, that industry is built on connection. Careers intertwine, and creative partnerships shape the landscape. Sandra Oh and Mina Shum have experienced this evolution firsthand. 🍁

Pour Sandra Oh et Mina Shum, ce lien a commencé avec Double Happiness, un film phare du cinéma vancouvérois et une exploration déterminante de l'identité dans le cadre multiculturel du Canada. Yellowjackets is back, and so is Sophie Nélisse as Shauna Shipman! To mark the occasion, we're revisiting her first ever Cannes Film Festival, attending as the star of the film Mean Dreams, in 2016.

At the time of her Cannes debut, Nélisse was already an accomplished actor. She had won the Canadian Screen Award for Best ing Actress for her breakout role in Monsieur Lazhar and had built an impressive filmography that includes Endorphine, Ésimésac, and The Book Thief. Other favourites since have been Evan Morgan's The Kid Detective, and Aisling Chin-Yee's The Rest of Us.

For those eager to see more of Nélisse beyond Yellowjackets, her recent work is well worth exploring. She plays the titular character in Louise Archambault's Irena's Vow, and was a featured player in Chloé Robichaud's Sundance darling Deux femmes en or.

Vil et Misérables, réalisé par Jean-François Leblanc, suit un démon misanthrope et son assistant humain enthousiaste dans leur quête pour sauver leur librairie.

Fabien Cloutier et Pier-Luc Funk, les deux vedettes du film, nous parlent de l'adaptation de la bande dessinée à l'écran et du fait d'être au service de la comédie.

In celebration of the Adam Brody Renaissance, we're bringing back an interview of a Letterboxd favourite.

The Kid Detective, written and directed by Evan Morgan, is a dark comedy about a former wunderkind detective, now in his early 30s, who drinks, wallows in self-pity, and is still solving trivial mysteries in his small town. Everything changes when a teenage girl, played by Sophie Nélisse, shows up in his office, offering him his first real case.

Morgan and Brody, who stars and is also an executive producer on the film, spoke to us about writing the film, the emotions that come with growing up, and their joy for the film's recognition.

The interview was conducted right after the announcement of the film's 4 nominations for the 2021 Canadian Screen Awards: Best Original Screenplay (Evan Morgan), Best Art Direction or Production Design (Jennifer Morden and Matthew Bianchi), Best Original Score (Jay McCarrol) and the John Dunning Best First Feature Award.

Writer-director José Avelino Gilles Corbett Lourenço takes us behind the scenes of Young Werther, his modern reimagining of one of Goethe's best known works.

Lourenço spoke to us about casting Douglas Booth as Werther after watching The Riot Club, to collaborating with cinematographer Nick Haight to craft the film’s vibrant aesthetic.

Daniel Beirne and Emily Lê lead the cast of Paying For It, a film based on the graphic novel from Chester Brown.

We had the chance to meet them last September at #TIFF, alongside director Sook-Yin Lee. She told us about the importance of involving her community and the local Toronto artists in the filmmaking process, and how that contribution helped bring a more nuanced and reflective quality to the film.

Originally from Ottawa, BAFTA-winning and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Kari Skogland's journey in the industry has been nothing short of remarkable.

Transitioning from editing to directing, her portfolio includes an array of projects such as television commercials, music videos, films such as Fifty Dead Men Walking and acclaimed TV series including The Handmaid's Tale, The Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire, The Americans, Marvel's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and more. Beyond her on-screen contributions, Kari is also the founder and CEO of Mad Rabbit, a film and television production company.

Kari talks to host Marriska Fernandes about what she learned from her days editing commercials, her leadership approach on set, and her continued commitment to elevating women in the industry.

David Cronenberg's latest film, The Shrouds, made its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival! This Canada- coproduction is the legendary filmmaker's seventh official selection at the fest and stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pierce and the canadian actress Sandrine Holt.

Cronenberg and Diane Kruger spoke with us about the personal nature of the film, and of never getting over being invited to Cannes.

The film was then presented at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.

The Shrouds is now out in Canadian cinemas, and will be released in on April 30, 2025.

Christian Sparkes, the director of The King Tide, presents a captivating psychological thriller set in an isolated fishing town in Newfoundland town.

The film follows a child with extraordinary abilities who transforms the community into a paradise free from illness and death. But when tragedy strikes and the child's powers fade, the town is torn apart by differing views on how to cope.

At the film's premiere in Newfoundland, Sparkes and star s Fisher talked to us about the themes of the film; the corruption of human nature, and the consequences of greed.

In Flames, written and directed by Zarrar Kahn, had its World Premiere in Quinzaine des Cinéastes, an independent selection of the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.

In Flames marked the first horror film from the South Asian subcontinent to premiere at the Croisette. The film was also Pakistan's return to Festival de Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, after a gap of more than 40 years. In Flames went on to be selected as the Pakistani entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

We caught up with Kahn before his film premiered to learn more about In Flames, and how he felt about his film being part of the program!
