The American Cinematheque’s BLEAK WEEK: CINEMA OF DESPAIR comes to The Prince Charles Cinema for its 4th Annual week-long celebration of films that “fearlessly plunge the depths of human despair.” This year’s festival will expand beyond Los Angeles to seven cities, with American Cinematheque partnering with 10 venues across the United States and internationally to London – where it will transpire at The PCC.
Our first wave of shows were announced yesterday, and promises Introductions from the likes of Robert Eggers, Andrew Haigh, Prano Bailey-Bond, and Q&As with the legendary British director Mike Leigh! Keep in mind, this is just the first wave. You won’t believe what we still have in store for you – it’s hard to imagine so much excitement is emanating from such cinematic desolation.
The London leg of the festival opens with the traumatising 1978 British animated classic WATERSHIP DOWN, featuring an Introduction from Andrew Haigh (Director of All of Us Strangers).
Our week of particularly bleak films will largely focus on British cinema, which will include Mike Leigh’s BLEAK MOMENTS and NAKED – both featuring a Q&A with the legendary Director in person! Other British highlights of the festival will include 10 RILLINGTON PLACE with Introduction from Prano Bailey-Bond (Director of Censor), Danny Boyle’s TRAINSPOTTING, Mike Hodges’ GET CARTER, Charlotte Wells’ AFTERSUN, Clio Barnard’s THE SELFISH GIANT, Jimmy T. Murakami’s animated adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ WHEN THE WIND BLOWS, and the British apocalyptic horror THREADS.
The line-up will also feature some films from further afield, including William Friedkin’s SORCERER, Elem Klimov’s COME AND SEE, John McNaughton’s HENRY : PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, Sam Peckinpah’s STRAW DOGS, Alfonso Cuarón’s CHILDREN OF MEN, Louise Weard’s epic transsexual odyssey and cult hit CASTRATION MOVIE i. TRAPS, and Toshiyuki Mizutani’ ISOLA: MULTIPLE PERSONALITY GIRL, Robert Altman’s IMAGES, and F.W. Murnau’s THE LAST LAUGH featuring Live Score by Hugo Max.
Finally, we will close the gloomy week of cinema with a special performance of Andrzej Żuławski’s 1972 Polish horror THE DEVIL, featuring an Introduction from Robert Eggers (Director of The Witch, The Lighthouse and Nosferatu).
