That Obscure Object of Desire

1977

★★★★

"Mathieu, you just don't understand women."

While the overall thrust of the film is problematic in 2020, filled with textbook exemplars of male entitlement and objectification, Buñuel's final film remains superb precisely because it holds a mirror up to both of these things. Having two actresses play his titular object aptly demonstrates the interchangeability of that desire. It's a subtly surreal and lushly realised capsule.
