Lawrence of Arabia

★★½ 8

I know, I know.

This rating is probably sacrilegious.

However, while I found Lawrence of Arabia to be BEYOND beautiful (simply some of the most stunning cinematography I’ve ever seen), I... was so absolutely emotionally detached throughout almost the entire elongated runtime.

I’m not opposed to long films by any means (Boyhood is one of my favorite films of all time, and I do have quite a soft spot for Gone with the Wind), but I just kept searching for…

YES I know I just went on a long spiel yesterday about the importance of not preemptively judging a film on its runtime before actually watching it but... this is sadly an example of my fears coming true.

There’s a lot to appreciate here (and Christopher Walken turns in WONDERFUL work), but it’s stretched FAR too thin over 184 minutes. Really wish I connected with this one more.

And, as with every movie, it needed MORE MERYL STREEP.

Sadly found this to be the least accessible of any of Kubrick’s works that I’ve watched thus far, but willing to it that this is likely due to my lack of familiarity  with the historical context, as well as having a fair bit of the humor fly over my head.

Certainly still splendidly shot (though much less visually striking than 2001 or A Clockwork Orange) and excellently acted, but overall, this is likely one I appreciate more than outright adore.
